You've mistaken Artifacts with Relics.
Relics are the things you can place in temples.
Artefacts are the things you place in Museums.
Second would be to build Mont St. Michel and be prepared to burn Apostles.
The only way I can think to farm Artifacts would be to lose in theological combat. There is a Wonder that grants that promotion to all units and you could easily manipulate the AI in to building half a dozen of their healer unit. I've done it and created a situation where I wasn't going to win any religous confrontation.
Yeah, I had a feeling that might be my only choice. It's a good thing there's a religious belief that means you don't lose pressure from dying in theological combat, at least. That plus Mont St Michelle equals relics for days...if your opponents keep sending inquisitors or apostles to meet you, at least.
If you wanna play the relics game, try playing The Khmer. They really can get a heap of relics early on, as their missionaries are martyrs.
You forget: conquest + trade. Play against The Khmer and Poland to acquire relics.
I thought great works (and relics) disappeared when you conquered a city. I'd noticed in recent games that I wasn't acquiring any of the stuff my enemies had, lately.
I imagine he did not have space for them
