1) Sacrifice a couple of units in battle,
2) get more currency the normal ways i.e commerical hub buildings

dont know any other ways apart from the milatry policy.

Then once you build more commercial hubs (or harbors) ... TRADE ROUTES! big money, especially routes outside your empire.

Combining units into corps, armies, fleets, and armadas reduces the cost.

I just finished a game where every city had a harbor, and a few also had commercial hubs. I was rolling in gold; more than I could possibly spend, and that was without Big Ben or the Great Zimbabwe. I also got almost all the great admirals without even trying, and some of those are really good -- I got a frigate armada and a battleship with a free promotion long before I had researched Mobilization or Steel.

Believe they are both part of certain Civic upgrades, but I forget which they are.

I never have any problems with this.. but then again I tend to love city states and commercial hubs.

You build corps/fleets with the nationalism civic. And you get armies/armadas at the mobilization civic. They both come in the modern era. Besides the -1 maintenance card and a -2 maintenance card later on they only way to reduce maintenance costs is to sell units. Do not sacrifice them in battle as that will incure unnecessary war weariness. Your best option is just to increase your gold income through various policy cards, building commerical hubs, harbors, traders, and suzerain of economic city states. If you are in a real pinch for gold you can also complete district projects

Units can be expensive. There's plenty of debate about production cost for districts versus units. Get your production up and running early. Trade routes are a good early way. Don't be careless with your units. Don't lose them in a battle, because they take a while to replace. Live to fight another day.

Yeah, I never really build units until I have policies that favor them.. like the +50% production ones, it's a limitation, but I wait till it's effective to build it.

Only exception to this is aztecs, as you really are best just spamming eagle warriors right from the start (and then holding onto that policy once you do get it).

Generally you won't be bothering with forming corps until much later in the game.. likely at the point where you've already taken out a couple civs.

But it certainly is one way to save on maintenance costs.

I hardly eve build anythign if there are civics to lower their cost. Melee/Ranged, cavaly, naval, settlers/builders., encampents, ect. A good trick is to switch as many cities to build such units or buildings as you can afford when you invoke a certain civic.

For example, let's say you want builders and have4 cities. You kick off the civic for -50% cost to builders and settlers. Then stop producing everything else in other cities to switch to builders. The only time I do not switch cites over is if they too are producing something else that is at a reduced cost, they are driving towards a wonder, or something critical, such as walls if the city is threatened. Of maybe their is just somethign you really want to comple suc as a univeristy fo the civic boost.

The key to this game is lowering production costs for everything. Remember the current pruduction is saved and you can go back to them. There is one exception though, I believe, and that unit production progress may not be saved if the unit is upgraded through science. SO if you have a 1/2 build spearman and then get pikemen from research, you may lose the current buidl fo rthat science. I don't think it carries over.
