My expierience is pretty lackluster with multiplayer, I do play with the NQ mod so that tends to help somewhat with thier community. The game is just long, and the only way to make it quicker is play faster and/or play with people that dont take 1-2+ minutes per turn. End game it can be difficult to play faster when you get alot of cities but usually at that time there are wars going on so, thats civ for ya.
These games are more time sinks than they are 30-40 minute drops in the pond. It's just how the series was developed as a grand 4X RTS.
Map size: Standard.
Map type: Shuffle.
Game speed: Standard.
Score victory: Off.
Everything else on random/standard.

Yes, games take a long time. But at least they have a definitive ending.
You are playing a 'match'.
When you play those sandbox strategy games, like Tropico or Anno, they just go on and on.
