In my current game on a tiny map, I attacked Japan early on and they were left with only one City. I suddenly realized that Rome had converted their Capital and the rest of the four Nations and also a few of my own Cities. Four or five Apostles were approaching my Capital, I guess they had only one more City to convert for a Victory so I had to declare War and destroy their religious units. I then helped Japan to restore their Religion and converted a few of my own Cities to their religion just to be on the safe side.
I normally try to build a religion district and temple to get a prophet to found a religion. I'm not trying to win a religion victory, rather prevent the AI from winning that way.
As bluetooth mentioned, if you don't control that, you can get overrun by others' religion and lose the game that way. If you have not founded your own religion, there's pretty much no way to prevent it.
You can, as you probably noticed, buy them with faith or gold though.
Honestly. Having at least 2 Holy Sites (if you're running with the +1 Great Person Pantheon belief - you really really should....!) 3 Holy Sites if you're not and you'll never miss out on a Religion again. That or Stonehenge but trust you me. It's the first wonder China goes for!
There's plenty of ways to prevent it with a fierce military and using another player's religion.. but besides that.. if you wait to get a prophet once you have a temple.. you'll always be too late in the games I play.
I play on 18 A.I. huge maps, generally everyone gets a religion by 1,000 B.C. or so (My time as Arabia for example started one in 900 BC).. there are however numerous ways to get a religion sooner.
1. Take over an A.I. with shrines and holy sites.. and for bonus points right before they get a religion.. as well as burning down their holy sites with pillaging if you're just trying to prevent them and not take it over. (if you want the area, leave it intact for your own great person points).
2. Need at least 2 cities with holy sites.
3. Use district projects like prayers to gain sharp boosts to great people.. may have to do twice if you're short on time.
4. If possible, get the great prophet policy, boosted from founding a patheon, and use it as your wild card once you start a normal government.
(note, only useful in going for this first, if Greece).
5. Certain patheon options that aren't often picked is the great person one, which adds 1 great people point to your holy sites.
6. Rush Stone Henge (unlikely to get, but possible.. especially on lower player number maps).. with 20 players it tends to go in 2,800 BC.
Generally, if you're -that- concerned about great prophets here are the best options:
#1 Arabia- Guaranteed Great Prophet
#2 Russia- Bonus Great Prophet points and tons of faith to buy it out
#3 China- ridiculously easy to rush stone henge (build workers instead) and oracle as back up
#4 Greece- Great Prophet Policy Rush
Aztecs- (I don't have them), but their warriors should make conquering ridiculously easy early game.
America- Early game boost with all units (same continent), so conquer key cities built up
Scythia- Weaker on religion but can still do faith options better
Brazil- District focused, rush holy sites for lots of faith
India- tecnically more faith.. though you have to meet other religions first so it's a bit risky
Egypt- Faster wonders, faith boosts with tile improvement.
Actually, if you're Sumeria you can hunt down barbarian encampments early game and probably earn all the faith you need from that, especially once you get the patheon boost.
Possibly Norway but you're not going to make it to the temple, best off with taking over opponents.
Or if you're tired of desperately founding a religion.. try the KONGO
Gain a ton of boosts for not having a religion, and no downsides beyond not having it as a victory condition, or founding it yourself (though you still get their boosts).
