Changing the map size for Huge, and setting the distance to the closest Civ
I love really giant maps... so I set the size for Huge to 256x160. That's twice the games normal setting. With that size, you will likely never explore the entire map with units. Then because the closest Civ is set to only be something like 12 or so away, I changed that to 54. Well, that turned out to be too much, as though I asked for 6 opponents, I only got 1 with multiple continents. For me, I actually liked that better, because I personally do not enjoy the constant nagging issues with dealing with the other Civs. My game became mostly me against the Barbarians, and that was truly enjoyable. (I may be weird, but that's what I like)

I'd have to guess right now, but the more appropriate distance is likely about 35-40 to get several opponents to actually show up on the map, because that separation distance is for EVERY civilization from not only you, but from each other also.

The map size can be changed in the file Maps.xml. (If you save a back up copy, save it in a TOTALLY different directory, not in any of the game directories) The start distance from one civ to another is located in the GlobalParameters.xml.

I was about to give up totally on this game until I made those changes. Now it is a lot more fun.

You've got it to work on that large? nice. I've set them larger than the default myself (Set them up to civ 5 map sizes) but i wasn't sure how large i could actually go. I may have to try that with 20 civs, 2 agendas, and 30 tile start distances.

Well, a couple of comments in response. First, I suspect that I could get it to work with that much bigger size is because I have 16 Gb of memory in my PC. Secondly, when I set that same size but used closer civ's, I had 7 civs, and all of them appear to have gotten on the map, playing a single continent, the game got slow pretty darn fast because so many units moving during the computer doing the other civ turns. So a caveat for you all to consider.

Thanks a ton for this, I love playing civ-building strategy games when they don't just devolve into vanilla border disputes. Played a huge game on the online speed with only 4 total civs, had an absolute blast, but the world always felt too small. Gonna try this out.

edit: for posterity, i'm trying it on a very freshly-built pc, i7 6700k, 32gb of 2666mhz gskill ram, 1 tb mushkin ssd, asus maximus VIII hero mobo.... handled that huge map with a low civ count very very well, shouldnt be too different from a huge game with a normal number of civs bc not all of them would make it to the end anyway. hoping it handles the superhuge.

It takes a very long time to start the game, it crashed the first time because i minimized it. Got it to work for about 30 turns or so when it crashed again. This second time was right when my warrior was near a barbarian scout (I thought i turned them off?)... gonna try again.

Ok cool tyvm. And for the barbs spawning while you have them turned off..Thats from Civic unrest..spawns them lol. The city states spawn barbs through unrest for sure. Im not sure about the other main CIVS though. Im guessing they do also, i was 500 turns into a game without barbs when out ofnowhere there were like 15+ units of them(guessing they spawned by the other civ leader).

Your system should handle it very well. (you did not say what video card you are using) My system is i5, 16 Gb ram, SSD - my video card is the nVidia EVGA 1060 6 Gb. I have had absolutely ZERO crashes. I just finished my oversized Huge map, winning it.
