Hansa considered harmful?
Hope the catchy title caught your eye :).

I am playing Germany, on Emperor, and after an early scare (Rome almost conquered me very early), I now have a solid empire (#3 in size, #1 in power), chock full of hansas next to commercial districts and/or harbors, with a few campuses sprinkled in. I have a very dense set of cities, to maximize the bonuses - around a dozen. I am a financial and production powerhouse (it's now up to about 1200 AD - I've just gotten Industrialization).

BUT ....
no iron was found in my empire.
then no niter was found in my empire.
I haven't gotten to coal yet, but I'm wondering .....

could it be that the game won't seed late-appearing strategic resources in a district? Or, conversely, that if it seeded the resources at game start, and, unbeknownst to you you build a district over it, it never appears? Or I am I just unlucky?

It happens it has nothing to do with districts.

You sound very unlucky. See, strat. resources are placed at the start of the map. If you build a district or wonder over a hidden strategic resource, you'll get the resource once its revealed. You can't accidentally destroy strategic resources.

VI has made strat. resources more rare/weirdly placed, so you just got a bad map.
On the plus side, you can play defensively without any strategics relatively well, but offense will be hell.

Thanks everyone, sounds like it's just bad luck. Oh well, it will make my eventual victory all the sweeter!

@Bouncer - if a resource comes up in a district or a WOW, you can't mine it. Do you get it anyways, or is it there, but unusable?

.... and ... no coal.

...and.... no aluminum (of the 7 I see on the map). Wow.

how do you know you're #3 in size? is there a screen for that in game? is that the 'Empire' item in the Score details?

Strategic resources that are not horses tend to be in resource scarce areas. As such most of them seem to end up in spots you wouldnt normally found a city in untill much later in the game like tundra, snow and desert.

In civ 6 you only need 1 or 2 at the most of any of those resources, and even then thats only for units in that era. Worst case scenario you are always using units that don't rely on resources. You can still win a military victory doing that if you want.

Thanks Hemdall, at this point I am coasting to a military victory, so it can be overcome, just wanted to (a) give more data, and (b) complain ;-)

Just got oil, and the curse is broken - I can confirm that it can show up on districts, in my case 1 popped up on a harbor, and it comes "pre-mined", so to speak.

Mango - I know I'm #3 in size just by eyeballing the map, which I've largely uncovered. You can also find out how many cities somebody has, BTW, by going to the 'demand' screen and seeing how many cities are listed as demand-able. Not the same as size, I know, but there you have it.
