What do I get from a research agreement?
India just offered me (Pericles-Greece) a research agreement for Flight if I went to War with Russia who is already at war with India. I am just about to finish Industrialization and Flight is a Tech that I could research next, if I wanted to. What do I get as a result of the agreement? Do we get extra research points from sharing research until Flight is finished ? or WHAT benefit?

I am already in a war with Aztec with Indonesian as my ally, about the only "benefit" I can see is trying to keep India alive a little longer in their war with Russia. However, Russia is on the other side of India from me, and they are both on the other side of a small ocean from me, and I am not in a position to intervene quickly in their War. Unless I am going to get a lot of research points out of this agreement, I see little reason to accept this agreement. Russia and I are the leading players in score, Civics, and Tech, etc. but we are currently at peace (we have never been at War with each other). Other Players keep trying to get me to join/start a War with Russia as their ally, but it would take a while for me to actually accomplish anything in such a War with Russia.

I do not quite understand what I would get out of the research agreement, since I have never had one before. Thanks for any helpful comments.

At the moment the agreement looks entirely to India's benefit to me. If all I am getting is the 29% boost to Flight, I think I will pass, it only saves me 3 or 4 turns in research time at the cost of a War with Russia.

Research agreements in 6 give you tech boosts (50% research time) Many of them can only be boosted through agreements or stealing the boost.

More often than not the opening trade is gross loss for you but if he is friendly just remove everything but the agreement. If he accepts fine, if not oh well. It's similar to borders. I accept open borders for open borders and even remove gold offered. (I don't know if that gets me points or not) but that's how I negotiate with AI

As far as I can tell, whoever does the research first for the Tech (Flight in my case) is in essence giving it to the other Player with no benefit to him, other than a possible increase in friendly opinion of you by him.

The only benefit might be in any additional terms agreed to by both parties in the original agreement, and agreeing to a War is an EXPENSIVE item on my part when the other Party is already at War (with Russia in my particular case). It seems like a rather one sided agreement, unless I want to not research Flight myself (in the near future) and hope that he (India) will research it in the near future, so that I get it from his doing the research.

I see very little reason for me to accept this agreement, just like I passed on all the other proposed Wars against Russia (by India, Indonesia, Japan, etc.).

Unless the Civ in question has a massive lead in a specific victory and they need to be stopped, or you intend to go for a Domination victory there is no reason to get pulled in to war bait. With Ghandi though, prepare to be joint war dec'ed by him after you refuse. I'm 99% sure when he went to war with Russia it was a joint war and he will seek more out. Egypt is another Civ notorious for joint wars.

India had already offered several times a joint War against Russia. But other Players have offered against Russia as well, several times also. Russia is ny strongest competition for score and overall standing, but they are on the other side of India from me on another continent.

It is just that this was my first offer for a research agreement, ever, playing Civ 6, and I was not sure what it was worth if I accepted it.

The one thing I am not sure about is Peace treaties by your joint ally in a War. How often, after 10 turns go by, will they make peace leaving you alone in the War?

Generally, I fight my wars one on one, and usually I let the other side start the war to avoid any additional warmonger penalties when I take cities from him.
