Agree 100%
I've felt this way about all civ games. On release they made me want to play the previous versions always. Partly for not wanting to learn new rules. Partly for nostalgia. But the last couple have just had really bad releases. It's like they have made the game with all of the expansions and then ripped them out last minute. Everything is out of balance or just plain doesn't work.
I'm sure after the last expansion, thing will be fine.
but I do find this one to be one of the best Civ games made. Not so much for playability today, but the way the mechanics are laid out. A lot more options to win on various victory conditions.
The war game needs to be fixed though. I still hate the one unit per tile method as it is improperly implemented. Movement is too restrictive and you are left moving 1 tile at a time. and constant traffic jams. and many other things I don't like.
but in general, I really like this Civ6 layout best so far.
I don't want to get on the hate train either but I agree, the land combat is in need of repair. Using turn clock it takes 30 years to drive from New York to Florida.
Also the Overwatch-like art style may contribute to the distaste many people feel for Civ6. It just doesn't fit at all with a game like Civilization. Leaders all look like characters from a Disney movie. Bleh.
But honestly, seeing how good Civ5 Vox Populi mod is you don't need this game at all. It doesn't bring anything new or interesting to the table.
They might eventually fix it, just like the subsequent addons fixed Civ5, but I doubt I'll ever play it. Just looking at the art style aimed at 8 year old children makes me wanna puke.
Today political correctness , shallowing & cutting off of features from past titles ruined many games and series . Sadly Civilization goes this way ...
Probably because Civ V was the best selling game of the franchise, making around 70% of the franchises total profit until Civ VI was released... and so 2 games(BE, and Civ V) cant possible form a pattern, let alone 1 game, as you are calling yourself a prophet, implies you made this prediction before Civ VI came out.
So you can't be a prophet in regards to saying "Civ games were getting worse," which is why people treated you as a "heretic." You trivialized yourself, guy.
Then there was that cash grab of Civilization Starships. A game so bad not even they will talk about it or acknowledge it anymore. I don't know who's running this company anymore but they just need to fire their entire Civilzation dev team and hire new talent because this series has become a complete joke.
Not saying Civ 6 > Civ 5, but the AI in Civ 5 do the same thing. Friendly for 1800 years --> denounced because I asked them to stop sending missionaries.
Yet, ironically, Civ V was the most successful Civ game ever and there are quite a lot of folks around for whom Civ V was their first Civ experience. They will likely never try Civ IV because it is older and looks a bit krap* compared to Civ V (* misspelled to avoid filter) which is a real shame.
FWIW, I thought Civ 4 on release was nowhere near as complete a game experience as Civ 3 was at the end of its development cycle. And Civ V was missing a lot of the units that Civ IV BTS had some of which never came back even in BNW. A new Civ has always been a big step backwards for some of the hard-core Civ fans and will be until it receives its first expansion, at least.
I never played AC so I can't comment on how BE managed to miss so much of the AC experience. I've enjoyed BE for what it is and still play it from time to time and enjoy it. I believe the closest you're going to get to AC nowadays is Pandora: First Contact which is great game with a challenging AI, as far as AI opponents go.
Lastly, I never even bothered with Starships. I LOLled when I read about it and knew it was never going to be a game for me. But it seemed to me to be a genuine attempt to build a smaller and faster to develop game building on the BE experience, thus the link between the two titles and the bonus content you got in BE if you owned Starships. Whatever else folks might think about BE, it sold enough for the series to justify spending money on an expansion and a spin-off game.
Yes, i am bitter, because i have been a fan of the series ever since i started playing civ 1 as a kid back in the day. I only check the forums sometime every month to see if there has been some kind of sign from the devs at least trying to fix their ♥♥♥♥, but so far nothing. But at least they sell new leaders!! Oh, Buddha....
