Steam allows you to use your account on different machines. All you need to remember is your account password as you will need to log in each time. Also you can't log in and play games on two machines at the same time.

I had to get a new account when not remembering my old info on an account that has two of my Civilization games on it. I am not going to buy the game again to be able to play them, so I guess they are lost to the winds.

but you can play some games offline and double down. Why you would do this is beyond me, but you can, mechanically. I often have 3-4 games running at once, tab between them, but that is also probably not useful to most people. I am only playing one at a time, its just that several of my games including civ take too long to open, so I leave them running. I can do that for now, my PC is hot enough to handle it with current games.

I've not tried it personall but I do wonder if its possible to play some older games using your suggestion and using a wired LAN. Some ealry games even allowed you to use multiple copies so long as it was a wired LAN.
