Returned city, occupied?
Arabia attacked and took one of my cities. In the peace treaty I got it back (the option: Trier, return). But once the city was returned to me, it is now "occupied" i.e. totally useless. I even had the option of keeping it or razing it, as if I had conquered an enemy city instead of getting my own city back. I will have to go to a previous save and reconquer it the hard way to see what happens (maybe it will still be "occupied" that way too?).

All this "occupied" thing of Civ 6 is poorly designed. It was much better in Civ 5 where the occupied status would go away eventually, and besides occupied cities were not totally useless as it is in Civ 6, they were less productive and you had less control but not zero.

I have faced the same issue today playing as Rome in Ynamp 20 Civ Giant Earth map (Diety)
Sumeria War carts captured on of my cities and after 10 times my legion destroyed their army and won one of their city. Soon Spain and Poland (Declared friend earlier) declared war on me.
In peace deal with Sumeria, i got to keep their city and they returned my city.
But my city is now useless stuck at 2 population.
Any suggestions ?

Well when I went back to a save and conquered the city, it returned to the fold without further problem. So what I'm doing now is don't bother with return city, the war is on until i can evict them. Another related problem is when you conquer a city and in the peace treaty they cede it. OK, if they ceded it that should be the end of it. But although the city does go to your ownership and you get normal resources, growth etc, they will hate you forever and ever for "occupying one of their cities". So, if you don't want that annoyance, you need to raze, raze, raze everything and have settlers follwing your armies in order to immediately reclaim the land with a city 100% yours.

The same thing happened to me. The AI returned my city after taking it from me in the peace deal and it remains as occupied. Guess I will also have to load an auto-save to conquer it myself.

Happened to me in Multiplayer. Please fix this.

Same same :/
This is one of the things the devs broke in the latest patch. If you trade away a city, doesn't matter if it's in a deal, or through conquest, then get the city back, it'll be forever occupied. It's especially broken in team games. where trading cities back and forth is very strategic.

Well, at least it has the advantage of removing that exploit.

Wouldn't surprise me that was their aim. They just forgot to, you know, check on the repercussions to the majority of their player base.

Same problem today for me !! Please fix this bug (returned city remains occupied forever)...

Had this problem in 2 separates game, it's very annoying. And the hate for occupying another one city forever is boring too. I'm considered as a war maker for taking a city in the 1st turns, without any war since 3000 years...

I have the same problem in my current game... A friend defeated me in a war, but he do not wanted to kick me in this game, therefore he wanted to give me two cities back, but therefore I would always be a vassal against the other players. But now I have the two cities (which were mine... and they are now still occupied... wtf?!) thats not good, its kills many possibilities in the multiplayer. Please fix that!

That was not a exploit, it enlarged the game in the multiplayer while it is not possible with KI players. So I hope they fix it.

Same here... also happened to me when the AI gave me a conquered City State as part of a peace trety. I had the option liberate or keep and then it went directly to occupied :/

Does someone know if this also happens when they give you cities of other AI??

Yeap, same story with cities of other AI as with CityStates. In this case it makes sense to liberate (even if you have to resurrect other CIV) and then reconquer. But this is plainly stupid.

I lost a city while fighting another civ, then immediately took it back. It remained occupied. Second or third it's happened under a variety of circumstances. To call it disheartening is an understatement.
