How to be alone? (HELP)
I'm in a strange situation. I've just decided to actually being playing this game, but I find it hard to overlook my civilization through the eras. With the constant threat/fear of other AI civs developing and growing whilst I struggle with the new mechanics and confusing map, I feel too intimidated to play long enough to get to know the game.

So here comes my plea for help. How can I, either in vanilla or through mods, set up a game that allows MY civ to be the only one in the game? If that is completely impossible, how can I, through mods, cripple the other civ into nothing more than a useless city state?
Please help, thanks!

You can uncheck other civs in advanced settings to have less players, but I've never tried unchecking them ALL to let you play alone, maybe you have to keep one or two. You can then play in the easiest setting. Note that if there is even one player in the world, they will start real close to you even if the world is empty. Another option is look for a mod that changes starting distance. If you change the starting distance to something real high, nobody will appear near you guaranteeing that at least your continent will begin emplty.

you could try this mod http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=932117812&searchtext=no+enemies

don't know if it works after patch though

I'd disable Barbarians in set-up also

OTOH, Civ is all about interacting with other nations. Why not try it out with AI players and using an easy setting to learn the ropes.

He's trying to learn HIS part of the game. How to level his civilization. All the icons and information can be confusing and overwhelming, and when every nation in the game is declaring war on you and you don't want to fight, you just want to learn, it can be really annoying.

He wants to learn the Civ growing part of the game first. He can then learn the warfare part of the game with units and movement and range and melee and all that, when he wants to.

That's all he means.

There may be a mod now to adjust the start distance. I did it manually by editing game files directly. There was a post on how to do it.

Mods are not working right now, due to a Civillization pack update

Well, I understand that in Settler level the AI doesn't attack you. That's why the easy levels exist. BTW I checked, you can disable all the AI players except one in advanced settings. You can also disable barbarians and use a slider to change the number of city states, although this last isn't necessary as they rarely attack you (they did on occasion in Civ 5, haven't seen it in this game unless they are allied with your enemy).

To each his own and by all means play the game that you paid for the way you want to play.
I think you would get a better experience with at least a couple other civs on the map though. Maybe try a standard size map with 2 other civs. With only 2 civs there shouldnt be much of an issue but at some point you will interact with them to get a little taste of that part of the game without it being overwhelming.
Also, there are a ton of vids on youtube. You may want to take a little time to check out a couple of those.

If you wish to play a non-combative, yet different mechanically version; the Outback Tycoon scenario is all about making money. You can't go to war, let alone create any units!

The game also provides a tutorial that /should/ get you up to speed. I have no idea, I've never played with it.

___________

If all that isn't enough, then perhaps the following steps on game set up:

Pick whichever Civ you like the best.
Set the difficulty to Settler (should be the easiest).
Set the map type to one with islands.
Set the map size to small.

Then click Advanced Setup:

Here you can choose other civs for the AI. You can pick whomever, but some are notoriously more aggressive than others. This shouldn't be an issue on Settler Difficulty. And you can reduce them to have only one other AI in the game.

On the right hand side of the menu you can toggle off the barbarians (source of early game frustration until you learn it).

You might also want to set your starting resources to Legendary Start. And the overall resources to Abundant. This will help you get used to upgrading these tiles as you see them.

This setup should provide an easy coast into the game. Also, keep the advisor around until she's redundant.

not to point out the obvious here but, you know that the WORST thign that COULD happn to you is losing a game ? right ? so what's holding you out ? are you that afraid of losing at a videogame that it cripples your ability to play it or have fun ? if so...maybe try to get help in the real world because it's not about civilization...

I don't say that to be jerk...but you know, it's true that it's only a VIDEO GAME...

if a game is only 1 hour long, then that is a valid criticism. this game takes 10, and to lose because of a bad ui or obtuse game mechanics, that of course is a negative and discouraging

Lol, what was it said? Failing / losing is the best teacher?

It's ridiculous to see that people can't even take losing in a single player game.

It's like refusing to accept that you are expected to fall down when learning to walk/run/ride a bike; just ask your parent or when your kid say such to you, you'd laugh back.

Honestly on the very lowest difficulty setting you have absolutley nothing to worry about.
You'd be surprised how much you learn through losing though. You have to be a loser before being a winner.
Thing is without the ai you'll just be under an illusion you're playing well when you're probably not playing well at all.
Cheiften would still create that illusion.

So you want SimCiv not Civ6?

You are making a judgement on the OP's character. Not answering his question. Pointless.

I suppose, in a last resort, you could play multi player hot seat with two civs and no AI. then you will end up playing both civs but you control the actions on both of them.

I actually did that for one game, after 10 games and never seeing Germany or France in any of them, and that way I was able to see them both lol. On the other hand the game ended up being very uninteresting and tedious.

I've heard mention in other threads that the "Settler" difficulty is bugged. It is supposed to be the easiest but for some reason doesn't play that way. Perhaps just increasing to the next level up will give you a hand.

Of course that could be false information, or they could have fixed that with this patch. Think I only ran that difficulty level once to get the achievement and moved on. Didn't notice anything, but probably wasn't thinking of paying much attention to the AI at that level.
