How to progress through Eras faster?

In my game it is 1918, and me, as China has just progressed to the Modern Era. Meanwhile another civilisation progressed to the Atomic Era 2 turns ago. How do I progress faster? It is just based on how much science you accumulate?

You do need the science point production. But the trick to advancing faster is to take advantage of a lot of the Eurekas that will give you 50% of the progress toward a tech if you meet a certain condition. If I do not have the Eureka yet, I will often do 50% of the research for a tech and then switch to another tech, if I think I can satisfy the condition for the Eureka in the relatively near future.

You can also focus your research along a narrow path through the tech tree to get to the higher level Eras faster.

You also need to build some Campus Districts in the right locations and build their buildings.

Finally, some Great Scientists can help you progress faster through the tech tree, as well as certain Wonders.

Hm, strange problem. Just launched Mars expedition in 1830 as China on Emperor. All you need is to found as many cities as soon as you can so that later you can build campuses there and get a lot of science. Don't bother with eurekas to delay you progress and just research what you need (commerce hub, industrial zone, campus, library, university, research lab). You don't want to research all techs in the tree because game punishes you for that - the more techs you know the more hammers it takes to build districts. So just beeline to what techs you really need and omit everything you can live without. This way you will get superior units faster and defending yourself (or taking out neighbours) will be piece of cake.
