When do you build your monument
Or any buildings in general for that matter...Most people i see build some order of units whether thats scout, slinger, setter, warrior, settler, builder or scout, settler, warrior, etc....

I tend to still try to play tall or at least develop my cities a little more than most and Im not sure if its effective. Ive been building scout monument warrior settler builder holy site or science before my 3rd city

After the district, buildings start opening up that arent just a granry and I will even build up my capital a bit more before my 3rd city. I usually settle my 3rd around turn 70/80

This is on Emperor/King btw

Whats your early build order assuming you dont want to go to war early but need enough units to deter war/fend off barbarians?

I build my monument when I see Gorgo. Rimshot.

As the Romans, I do not need to worry about building a monument.

As everyone else, it is usually:
* scout
* slinger
* gold purchase a builder
* warrior or settler ( depending on how bad the barbs are... )
* settler ( if did not build one already )
* monument

I almost always build a Grainary first, followed by a Builder (gold purchase if possible) to build farms and/or mines. More food means more citizens, means more production. Then I start working on other stuff.

To be honest, I often forget to build a Monument at all.

You need the Monuments to get culture which then gets you up the Civics tree, which gets you Governments, Policies and Religions/Buildings. Better governments are particularly important and useful. Plus of course, you need culture to get border growth (new tiles) for those new cities.

For new cities, not my Capital, my first two builds are grainaries and monuments. I tend to go for the grainaries first to speed up population growth.

If I meet a culture city state, or have resources that provide culture, I may skip it altogether. It has the most value when you are receiving 2 or less culture per turn.

Imo scouts are a waste of production because your otherwise-inactive military units can scout the areas that matter. Rangers are somewhat decent at barbarian hunting, though.

Scouts can cover a larger area faster, but knowing what the other half of the continent looks like has never been terribly useful to me.
All I need to know about is the immediate area around my borders, and a little bit past where I plan to build my next settlement.
Plenty of time for cavalry to explore later on.

Speaking of city-states, they are a good reason to build a scout early. The scouts help you discover the city states first and get that free first envoy. The bonuses to your capital at 1 envoy can really help in the early game. Of course, it depends on what map you are playing. If you are playing an islands map, forget about it.

Slinger - slinger - slinger - warrior - monument - granary / water wheel - archer - melee - districts. I play on marathon though, so by the time I'm working on a granary or water wheel, I've already conquered a couple cities.
