Think of it this way, let's say you LOVE gambling with your friends. Now, imagine one day your friends are all hit in the head with a baseball bat that does no damage aside from making them brainddead. Now, gambling is super easy and it is an instant victory because you literally have no one to play against, they literally can't play the game. Is it still fun if you are basically playing alone and there is little/no chance at losing? For me, no. I love poker, but I love it because I can lose, I hate Civ6 because I don't feel that I can lose.
Because official and Steam forums are where people got to complain about every game, and for a live game, they're going to be skewed more negative than outside sources. That's not to say they don't have legitimate complaints, but the overall impression is going to be far worse in these places. Best I can say is judge for yourself. Entertainment investments are a gamble. I've played plenty of games that the critics and overall player scores hated and loved them myself. And I've had it go the other way around.
Wait for it to hit $20. By then Firaxis will hopefully have fixed/updated the game to meet playable standards.
As it stands now, I own the digital deluxe version and likely won't play it again til late this year at the soonest.
if you are paying pennies for hours of entertainment, you've more than received your money's worth.
I do have to say, Civ6, mechanically, is the first Civ game in a while that I felt was a complete product on launch. In Civ5, the game was fairly mediocre and barebones until you got the expansions. In Civ6, I think most everything feels complete. Civ6's DLC is, imo, a game where the DLC will enhance the core game, rather than have the core game rely on the DLC, something I can't say about Civ5.
That said, like I said previously, the AI is so bad that all that praise is meaningless and doesn't matter as there is no compelling antagonist to play against.
This will make the game tollerable until the Devs actually impliment the basic/standard UI stuff their customer's already jurry-rigged for them, and they improve the AI so it does things that represent the "I" in AI.
Namely the Yet Not Another Earth Map Pack, and a few other by that author.
Why? Reasonably high expectations.
Civ is one of the great brands in this industry. It was earned by a number of great titles and works wonders for marketing.
The other side of the coin is that people who played earlier iterations will expect more than FIFA 2045. You can expect significantly more hostile reaction to attempts to "expand target audience", that too often comes with taking core audience for granted. There's a cousin of this tactics you might already know - removing "too complicated" features so it's not too intimidating - or stopping at "good enough" when working on certain parts, AI being one of the ugliest examples.
Basically, being a fan favorite does not mean people won't be critical about it - and furious about obvious screw ups. Which is fine by me, really - Firaxis has a goose that pops golden eggs out. It's only fair to expect that they won't starve that goose to collect 1% higher profit, make her cosplay as eagle because eagles are more mainstream or paint her pink, just because.
Personally, I feel series has peaked at IV, V being merely "good", which is hardly a praise given Civ's reputation. And that doesn't even include "mysteriously disappearing features" from IV that turned out to be "DLC policy" ever since Religion needed a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ xpack in V - I guess I'm supposed to be happy when pollution or individual happiness appear, this time with their own price tag.
The aspects I don't like:
How roads are made. It's interesting how the trade routes make the roads but if you want to make them you have to devote lots of time to build a large number of units to make the roads because they expire.
I have the same issue with builders. I absolutly don't like how builders expire. Production is already slow but you have to keep pumping out builders to get a city built up.
The graphics look more cartoony then Civ 5. I don't like the visual style as much.
The aspects I do like:
I like the districts and how you have to place them on the map. I like that they can be pillaged in batle. I like that they make the cities look more real.
I like how the objects being made show progress while they are being consrutcted.
I like how you can see the wonders on the map, that was a nice carry over from CIv 5.
I like that the armory disctrict can fire a shot at the enemy in addition to the city. It makes it feasible to place a city in a city and have the armory block the only path in on land and fortiy the entire area.
In general I feel like if the builders where put back to the way they have been from the dawn of the franchise this game would be darn near perfect.
That doesn't mean anything. A lot of those YouTubers are suck-ups.
They'll like anything.
Worst thing that ever happened was allowing everyone and their dog to review games on YouTube, and get paid for it. Now we've got developers sending them free games and technology to review their products.
It's crazy.
Big companies know how to win a kid's heart. Just flash the freebies. Flash the gear. Flash the dollar signs. It doesn't even have to be good. Just flash it for free, and these kids will bend at the knee.
Because of this, it's hard to get an impartial review of anything on YouTube.
Didn't you see what HP did recently with their new line of gaming computers? The HP Omen.
They blitzed YouTubers and sent a pile of them out. Boxes and boxes of tech for free.
Unannounced.
YouTubers were so stunned that they did half hour videos on how great HP was, and how they are in love with them. Best company ever, right?
Smart move by HP. But these kids were instantly sold on HP. Overnight.
I've been using Hewlett Packard products my entire life. I've never seen a kid rave about Hewlett Packard until a few weeks ago.
And just look at guys like Angry Joe and how he's changed over the years. That guy has been bought so many times recently, he may as well put a FOR SALE sign on his forehead.
Even when No Man's Sky came out, there were YouTubers refusing to hate that game, despite it being the worst game, and biggest scam, of 2016.
It's rare, but refreshing nowadays, to see a YouTuber truly hate a game that deserves it.
Civilization VI, in the condition it was released, should be burned at the stake.
Live streamed. On YouTube.
Aside from the AI there are several mechanics which require tuning. Same goes for the UI (Civ 6 is the most opaque Civ I've ever played) and missing comfort. Missing things like the UN. Weak air combat. Overemphasis on religion with no endgame compensation for it.
The AI is rubbish.
Simple as that.
There's no argument.
Even those who like it will agree.
So how can a single player game with poor AI be any good?
Ask yourself this.
