Prerequisites for Holy War?
I thought it was simply that the ai has to convert one of your own cities that was under your religion.

But I'm now getting holy wars declarations when I convert one of the ai's cities. From their religion, yet in other games, india being the worst for it, No no it's better this way, you'll see... the bastards.

I just couldn't get holy war against india, eventually just wiped them out. The converted dozens of my cities, with literally dozens of preachers etc swarming all over, the worst being they were getting in my way. My inquisitors were clearing the false gods.. it was just getting annoying.

So does anyone know the exact requirements for holy war?

That should help - but not by much

Sounds like you didn't have a religion of your own. You can't declare Holy War or win Religious Vicotry unless your civ is a founder.

That used to be the case so Kongo could never declare a Holy War. But as of the 2017 patch it;s been changed. I played Kongo and was able to declare a holy war. So IDK what the criteria is now. It's a bit of a mystery :steammocking:

Maybe it's just broken then. I've now had the holy war update before I had the holy war research.. so it really is confusing.

But it seems generally, you make your cities your religion.
Ai then turns one of them, you get holy war cassus belli.
If you don't update your cities, then ai turns one, then you turn it back and ai turns it back again.. you don't get the offer.
You can also get it by converting their holy city to your religion.

I do wish that we could conquer and destroy a Civ with a religion, and then turn their religion into your own religion, and/or for a significant price in Apostles and Faith Points merge their religion into your own religion.

Necro apologies, but this thread is exactly my problem.

I'm England with no Religion, but Spain has most definitely spread Catholicism to several English cities. Denounced them. Now, prior to going down this prepatory CB, mousing over Holy War clearly led me to believe the prereqs were met, just needed to Denounce and wait 5 turns.

5 turns passed and will NOT let me declare Holy War.

Is it perhaps a timing thing where you can only declare Holy War after Denouncing and a city was *recently* converted?

You can only declare a Holy War if you founded a religion.
