If you don't found your own religion you can't build Inquisitors to remove any religion. Same goes for having another religion completely convert your own religion. In other words your religion died off and there's no way to bring it back.
Be mindful though it is possible to actually lose a game if you take over too many converted cities.

i always use rome for the already connected capital to road and the temple free. i guess i will never have a religion
