The dev times are now simply too long. it takes, what, 5, 6 years minimum to have a new entry in an established series? And by that point, the global internet culture moved on so fast that what seems silly might seem lame in the game upon release or who knows what kind of drama hits the game out of left field. Something has to give - either marketing budgets, crunch or whatever. This is why there's now less enthusiasm for TES VI - you're not waiting for a year or two, we waited for a decade so even the hardcore fans grew up, got married, moved on... Hell, i just want to play my game series every 3-4 years with a new solid entry not wait 13 years! Hell, we should have had Fable five years ago...

I think they get it too, that's why we either have games that are kinda clunky at release like Stalker 2 but get improved or we just go into this looooong period of nothing at all.
Not sure what to make of it honestly.
I don't work in the industry, so I can't say what's going on behind the scenes on the Fable development. What I have read from articles over the years regarding studios forcing crunch time on their employees is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ horrendous. So if it's a choice between the two, I'll take delays 100% of the time.

Instead of trying to latch onto the hype of old games, studios could just make good games. We had over 2 decades between Baldur's Gate 2 and 3. 3 seems to be doing quite well.

I would say that it's also very likely that enthusiasm for TES VI is lower because of what we got in Starfield. There was a 5 year gap between Oblivion and Skyrim. It was ~6 years between Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. Maybe I'm misreading your post, but you seem to think 5-6 years is too long for sequels, but we've had these types of delays before.

I just want to play good games, sequels or not. If the cost of me getting a new game every couple of years is to chew up and spit out employees by crushing them under the weight of impossible expectations and bad management, the price is too high. I'd rather wait. There's always more games to play.

A lot of AAA disappointments the past few years, and heavy-hitters too, but also A LOT of hidden gems, breakout hits, etc. Anything you have to recommend? There's a really great cRPG Esoteric Ebb i am looking forward to - inspired by Disco Elysium. Right now i am waiting for:

Tainted Grail, Esoteric Ebb, Atomfall, from the new titles, and plan to purchase either Thaumaturge, ELEX, The Surge 1&2, Citizen Sleeper 2 is out as well, the first one was good.

Chains of Freedom demo is out now and it is REALLY good. Also, can't forget Swordhaven it is from the guys who made ATOM RPG, looking forward to that as well.
I don't keep up with new game releases. I'll occasionally check the steam store and see if anything gets my attention.

If you want to go backward, the Ultima games were probably what really got me into RPGs back when I was a young kid. The first games are really dated by today's standards, but 7 and 7 part 2 are still decent enough. They're clunky but fun.

This could be my nostalgia influencing me though.
