Never really played a Fable game before, why should I buy this?
I came here to ask a simple question: Why should I buy this?

I'm unclear as to what type of game this really is, is it a full fledged RPG? An action game?
How cartoony/childish is it(I assume so just based off the art style, correct me if I'm wrong)?

I'm a huge fan of RPGs, but I like my games to be primarily serious endeavors.

So, anyone wanna give me a run down on what to expect from this game?

You shouldn't. The whole game is "cartoony." The jokes are bawdy, the characters are over-the-top, and there are plenty of jokes about chickens. Aside from that, it's just not that fun to play, and this version is totally overpriced. You can get the original for $7 on console, $10 on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/204030/

The "improvements" they are offering are not worth the price tag, at least not until modders do A LOT of work.

Atmospherically speaking, it's pretty dark, from setting to story, but it is full of humor. This game isn't a joke. Watch some gameplay. Ignore Shralla.

The good things of Fable 1 are:
- Anime style story, long and intriguing
- The hero starts as a kid and could end 55yo (gray hairs/beard etc.), grows depending on your actions (fat, muscles, hairy, demon etc.), than there is a "shool" part with other young heroes (it reminds me of the X-men and mutants school, I like that kind of part and it's very rare in rpgs).
- NPCs have reactions also based on your actions. You can marry whoever you want and buy an house (those are located in different places), be good or evil, go around with jokes (and peoples will joke on you as well later) or be serious (and people will seem respectful or even fear you).
- Combat is fine, there are many powers and all pretty cool in combat, also the melee or archer ones are very very cool to see and funny to use. Your char can be balanced between ranged-cast-melee or much stronger in one-two or those.

Note:
- Fable3 completely sucks compared to Fable1, don't even think about touching that one or you will never touch another (it even lack the aging and everything is far worse).
- Fable The Lost Chapters is still great to play as it is (I re-played it a couple of months ago) but personally I love this game enough to buy the HD version, the main reasons are exactly what I told you anime-story and aging-rpg features.

Negative things:
- it's still too old to have an openworld, unfortunately is very rich of teleports between maps, it is divided on little zones but it's very well studied so that you don't get bored for that. Fable2 is a Fable1 with openworld+dog and that's why many think it's the best one (unfortunately it's the only one not on PC...)
- hair color depends on karma as well, blonde if good, black if bad (hairstyle instead is your choice, you start with one but you can "buy" styles in game).

because games are meant to be about fun and you are trying to make me work to convince you to buy it. Well I won't do it, man. I won't play by your rules. Instead I'll just play this.

I love this game, but I admit that a lot of that might be nostalgia. If you're new to this game some things may seem overly simple. That said: you did say you were a huge RPG fan and this game has defintely deserved his place in videogame history. You might want to check it out because of that. Just to see what people enjoyed a decade ago.

Hardly negatives to the game, more about personal preference. Sure we like open world games but we also like controlled, well-structured, paced and well designed and thought-out world design. Also the whole appearence changing based on your karma level was a feature that I loved lol.

I would say a negative to this game (and the original) is the simplicity of the game mechanics, it may not offer deep enough combat or questlines for the more hardcore roleplayers.

Well teleport-doors are always immersion breaking compared to no teleport. A thing is to just pass through the door, another to see a loading time for each step you make. Loading times are definitely a bad point in any kind of game, and it doesn't depend on personal preference as nobody will see as more funny to watch a loading screen instead of actually playing.

Also blonde-black hairs are a bit more "imho" probably, but still hair colors have nothing to do with karma and so it's a pretty bad choice by devs, compared to the whole rest of the feature which definitely makes more sense, like: if you don't put strenght points you will be thin and if you eat too much you become fat. But I guess it was needed to make you easily recognize the blond-paladin by the bad thug.

Your opinion of course, a teleport and loading screen may not be immersive breaking for people (like me). Also, your hair style changes based on your karma and becomes more grey the further you get into the game.
Thunder Sep 11, 2014 @ 12:59pm
It is immersion breaking, less or more, it is (loading time=pause in gameplay=break). Also even if you want to lie to yourself just to think you're right, still a loading screen cannot be funnier than active play. We're not kids probably, so we don't need to kid ourselves while talking or it doesn't make sense to even comunicate.
The world is not made by opinions only, that's a too much used excuse these days, there are things that are clear like the sun and opinions can just get in their way.

I definitely said what I personally think, that's pretty obvious but still not all of that is just "opinion".

Loading times can be put in a bad review as reason for bad vote, to start with.

Thanks for your replies, the aging and moral consequences sound interesting. Still not sure if it's right for me, it doesn't come off as very RPG heavy. I could be wrong.

I'll keep thinking, but thanks!

I give this game a 8/10 mainly due to i played it when it was released I have played all the others on release. It was a great game when I was younger and still seems appealing to this day. The first was the best by far and has alot of gameplay in it if you do EVERYTHING and not just the story. I wont make this a biased opinon it has its flaws if you want to try it you should take a risk if you have the cash spare, if not mate you should leave it a few days and wait to see peoples reviews on this revamped version :).

You may want to give us a clue as to games you consider having good rpg elements.

I am an old fartress and am very excited to play this game again. Actions do have consequences and there are choices. I thought the story serious and became attached to the characters within the first chapter.

What rpg games have you played if you do not mine me asking (video games )

Well you could check my profile here, I play tons of RPGs.

Favorites would be the Dragon Age and Fallout series. Other favorites would be The Elder Scrolls franchise, Mass Effect series and plenty others. I pretty much enjoy any good western RPG.

Definitely not a fan of anything resembling a JRPG.

Yeah, it's pretty RPG lite, it's a very short game that you could beat in 12 - 15 hours, 20 - 25 hours if you 100% it. Your actions in the game don't really affect the world, but they do affect your character itself in a big way with the way you look. The combat gets really easy after the halfway point, and just becomes an annoyance pretty much if you don't play on the new hard difficulty. It's not really worth the asking price if you didn't play it when it came out, but i recommend getting it on a sale.

Ahha! I can say you and I have the same taste in games. I love TES and can recall playing Morrowind while waiting for fable to release. Fable is probably one of my fav games of all time.

I think you can find some gameplay on youtube but dont watch too much becuase the story is really good in my opinion.

I was 40 years old when i first played Fable and it did not come off to me as a childs game.

The combat is not complex because it is a 10 year old game.
