I can still log in GFWL and play Fable 3 pc with my Xbox account.
The only thing not working anymore with it are the dlc.
Now, about Fable 3 being removed from the store, from what I can remember back in the days, Lionhead (rip) said there weren't anymore activation key being made, and Microsoft didn't plan in doing some more, so the game has been removed from the store.
They were probably too busy killing Lionhead with Fable Legends I guess.
Still, why keys ? Well courtesy of GFWL. (Okay, maybe it's 75% the fault of GFWL)
Halo 2 Vista, Gears 1, same issue. Well, Halo side, MCC is here now.
But Gears OG ? We have the ultimate edition, which is a remaster, on Windows Store only.
If I want to play the vanilla version on PC, for reason X or Y, like Fable, I can still log in and play it.
For Fable 3, what I don't understand is why they didn't transfer the game to be GFWL-less like some third party publisher did.
I have Bioshock for GFWL, and 2K converted the key to a Steam key, so I could redeem it on Steam.
They could either do that, or convert the GFWL login system to the current modern one on Win10/11. (Heck, I'm pretty sure its roots are from Win8)
Xbox team tends to really neglect some of their games on PC. If not most of them..
But not everything are blue or red, even if it doesn't look too good on PC.
They stopped the backward compatibility program because they reached the end of what was possible.
But I'm looking at the Xbox catalog, and I'm seeing some Microsofts games left behind like ... Fable. Or Midtown Madness.
Honestly, some times I don't know what to think, on one hand they rerelease old games on Windows store for insider ring, and the on the other, there are no follow-up, they don't go further.
They're here going on giving money left and right for games on gamepass, to third party publishers, but the thing right in front of them, they just don't budge.

the german license holders are squatting on the rights until someone pays them back for the tv series.
