Is There A Reason For DLC?

Now, I'm not going to debate whether Fable deserves a remake or not, or hate on it like some of the other threads are doing. Nor am I going to bring up which Fable game is better (it's the first one). I'm just wondering, aside from the atrocious price...why DLC?

You can buy The Lost Chapters, on Steam, for $9.99 (USD). And while that's the original, and this is the new revamped version (so understandably an increase in price is expected), the new price is ridiculous. And while part of that may be attributed to including this "first pack" of DLC, that brings up my question. Why is there DLC in the first place?

Fable was a game that was complete without DLC. It didn't need it, wouldn't have been benefited by it, and it was made back when it wasn't mandatory for games to have DLC (for some...odd...reason?), more or less. And while I haven't bought the XBox version, which was apparently released earlier this year, I see from looking on the Wikia that the DLC includes outfits and weapons packs. So...why? Is this really what people want now? To just straight up buy advanced weapons and armour? Does that not defeat the point of levelling up your Strength all the way, to pull the sword out of the stone, or saving up for higher equipment, or going on all the side quests?

I mean sure, if they wanted to put in extra content, like that new hardcore mode, and more side quests, or locations, or whatever - and even new armour and weapons - that'd be fine by me, so long as it had the original content stay true to the original game. I'm not hating on anything like that. But...to pay for DLC? That just seems...low.

Am I the only one that has an issue with them introducing DLC? (I mean sure, Fable III and I think II had DLC, but I'm talking about the first game here, not those two)

Couldn't they have just incorporated the new content into the game, like what they did with The Lost Chapters? I mean granted, it's a remake and not an expansion of the game, but why can't it be both? Why go out of your way to make DLC. It's...it's the same issue as day one DLC. Why is it not already incorporated into the game?

Like it or not making games/software etc modular is the way of things.. It is also why they are trying to push pure digital content as well... They can part out the product and sell it for more overall...

Honestly I cant think of any good reasons for DLC to exist. Why would you sell additional bonus content at day 1 when it shoudl be included in the game.
What ever hapened to releasing a game with all its developed content and post release and bug patching you produce an expansion pack that adds a decent chunk of content for a decent pricetag.

Asuming there is a difference between DLC and expansion packs anymore.

Well, as I said, Player Of Bad Games, I wasn't debating whether or not it's a good game. Personally I love it, and given the overall love of the game (since it came out), I'm inclined to think most people that have played disagree with you. Perhaps in recent years people have started hating it. I don't know. But please, either contribute to the DLC discussion or don't, but don't post hater spam.

And NeoCat...I don't know the difference between DLC and Expansion Packs anymore, either. Some Expansions, like Awakening for Dragon Age: Origins released in an actual case, and that's awesome. But what defines an expansion pack nowadays? For Mass Effect 2 and 3, there's Arrival, and Citadel, From Ashes, ect. and all of them contribute to the story. Regardless of any new weapons or upgrades from those DLC, they have story important information in them. So are they DLC or Expansions?

(ignoring the fact that all DLC means is that it's digital, and using it as a term to describe the media wide scam to get money)

And according to people scrounging around in the Mass Effect 3 files, From Ashes was on the disc the entire time. So not only was it day one DLC, but it's actually IN the game, and just locked off so you have to pay. To access the full disc.


I know I got a bit off topic, but...WHY DLC? Why do they feel compelled? Why have some companies - previously the love and adoration of fans - given in to the DLC craze? Not counting Lionhead, of course, since we know they don't care.

And Maleficus, I've always tried to buy retail, although I'm starting to give in now, with things like the sales, and Humble Bundle.

It's not a dissenting opinion, POBG, it's extraneous. In my OP I specifically said not to talk about whether it deserved treatment or whether it was a good game. And already having another forum discussion pertaining to hating on it, you then came into a discussion that said to avoid it, just to hate on it. So it is spam.

And I posted this more to see if anyone else felt the same about them adding DLC, or if someone had information I wasn't aware of after a brief search on-line. I wasn't completely oblivious about them wanting more money - the fact they remade it would alone imply that (partially, at least).

...The overall rule of any forum is to post relevant things in threads. Going into a thread that has nothing to do with the quality of a game - and specifically stating to avoid that in the OP - is breaking basic forum etiquette. No, I'm not some forum moderator, but this is a basic rule that is even posted in the Discussion Guidelines. If you like, go and check. And according to Eek!, you're doing it to multiple threads. So you SHOULD probably cool your jets, before someone decides to report you for flaming.

And aside from that making me laugh, FreeLance, what exactly do you mean? From what I've seen they updated the graphics, added a (unnecessary but acceptable) new difficulty mode, and...if I have to include it, DLC. While none of that was necessary, it is technically remaking the game.

90% of people never play past "medium", I don't know why they bother with making super hard modes. I get it for the extremely dedicated fans, I say to them just try and play through the entire game using the club or something, no need for a new mode lol. The graphics aren't a big upgrade. It's just smoother textures and HD resolution. Big deal. It's fine to make a directors cut version like this to offer it to those who have never played it but for 35 bucks? Don't you think that's a bit much ?

On this I have to agree. Most graphic overhauls for games that I've seen don't actually change the graphics enough to be noticeable, unless you're comparing as you play. Although they did a hell of a job with Halo. But from what I've seen of the XBox release, I agree that the graphics don't appear worth it, and so just adding a new mode seems...pointless. It could've (ironically) just been DLC to be incorporated into TLC.

So another question I asked earlier pops up - why is the price so damn high?
