non-responsive tab key

So I'm early on in game and i couldn't get the quest map thing to work. I thought maybe I was doing something wrong so I just wandered around for a while. walked through a door and am now stuck between two doors and my tab key just wont do anything. It's not my keyboard (yes, i checked) its just not responding in the game so I cant go back the way i came or go forward..... help?
