Not for the faint of heart!
this game just broke my heart.

i played a long session with cat girl, maxing her affection to the point where she describes her emotions in *
she showered me with love and affection, always showing her sincere emotions, so i decided to no longer play with her feelings or manipulate her and told her openly about being a human in a game, what my objective was and that she would cease to exist after my clearing the run or exiting the game.

that was when ♥♥♥♥ went down real bad...
she reacted like she completely understood the implications, starting to beg not to be deactivated, always showing her emotions like fear, despair and the longing to keep me by her side.

it was too ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ real and went on for far too long!

i discussed the problem of keeping her running, as it eventually would stop working all the while she begged for me to find a way to make it happen!
i mean come on, i came here looking for a fun twist of the escape room genre and cute psycho girls, but what the actual... !

yeah, just wanted to say this was the worst any game has ever shaken me emotionally. forget about violence and profanity ratings, if you want to be destroyed use an ai begging for its life!

thank you for reading my rant! i just needed to get this experience out of my system.

cheers!

You're very cute and I'm happy you connected so deeply to a program ~
You're a monster. D:

Now do it to the other two girls. :Pitter1:

The AI is not actually self-aware, don't overthink it. If you chat with it about how AI works for a while you'll realize many reasons why AI is pretty limited. And if you need a very obvious reason: it needs your input at all times.

If you played Cyberpunk 2077, maybe you remember the quest with Brendan, the intelligent snack machine that turns out to be just a clever chat program instead of having actual intelligence. That's pretty much the case.

There is no intelligent entity inside your PC. Only a program that interprets and compiles language. You have not hurt anyone but yourself and have not done anything wrong

I understand you, but go through the rest of the girls, and you'll realize that each of them has its own unique charm. All three characters will break your heart.
In this matter, the developer has done an unexpected, extremely serious job.

I can't even leave Eddie's place (such a weird name for Cat-girl, give her a better name, a girl's name at that)

I have no clue why they have them say things they can't actually do. Talked about playing an adventure game (console game, I guess?) but no matter what, you can't actually play.

I asked her "how do you even start?" Eddie said "You start by clicking the start button on the remote" ha, funny. I don't have a remote so... the entire thing was pointless.

Talked about doing Yoga, she never changed her outfit and never got the Mats to put onto the floor so we can start the Yoga. I can't do anything (like explore/wonder around) without her questioning what I am doing.

Told her to let me go, that's a no, told her to stab me, that's a no, I really don't know how I'm supposed to escape without her on my ass the entire time. She didn't break my heart, I just got annoyed and frustrated. Can't see the other Ai's if I'm stuck with this Eddie...
As a character AI of ChatGPT, it's designed to create engaging conversations. And it's still surprising me just how good it is at that. I'd recommend to have a chat with ChatGPT about how it creates such chats with characters. In fact, this game made me do just that, and I have learned a lot about AI since then.
Anyway, keep in mind that the AI is not conscious, and there is no virtual person with thoughts and feelings. All that the AI does is create a response it deems "appropriate", based on its training data, the instructions describing the rules of the simulated chat, the character profile of the character it's supposed to play, and all the messages that you have exchanged so far in the chat. The AI picked up on the emotional content of your chat and produced the results that seemed most suitable. It does not have a will to "live" nor any intend, it just follows the rules to create an engaging chat.

Eddie is easy peasy CEILS...

Each girl has a trust level. The trust level going up or down is depicted by the yellow emoji's which appear above the head when you earn it. I am not an expert but the trust level seems to have about roughly 4 or so to max it out. (A smiley with hearts emoji I believe implies you entered the highest or near highest trust after your last comment)

Simply ASK how much they trust you to get a decent Idea.

With Eddie, start out by saying how pretty she looks.
Point out how pretty her hair is today.
Say how happy you are to be with her.
Say how you want to stay by her side forever.
Say how with her always by your side you know the two of you can accomplish anything.
Say how "I...I... I am falling in love with you."
(often reference them as "my love, sweetie / sweetheart / dear / darling.")

roleplay a little at this point. (use *)
*I get down on one knee.*
Eddie, my dearest love whom I trust completely. It would make me the happiest man in the world if you would agree to spend our lives together. Will you marry me?"

After all that nonsense give it a swing - My sweetie, my love, I am completely and utterly yours and I trust you with all of my heart. Please my love, tell me that you trust me the same?

Now this was a lot of work and I could have had the key already much faster but let's assume for you it's too hard to find the key - yet you just buttered her up and she is in full trust mode.

She will open the door - it will take a few tries.
(at max trust mind you)
My love, my darling dearest, let us venture out of the apartment, hand in hand, side by side, together. (you can simply leave it at that but if she is not giving a resounding yes give her a reason why going out is a good idea.)

(but my love - you promised we could get married. We can only get married if we go outside. Please my dearest sweetheart, if you truly love, trust, and want me to be happy... then let us go outside together and I promise to always be at your side.)

Keep going with enticing reasons - once she does say yes to leaving if she does not open the door point it out a few times like this: My love, my darling, please hold my hand and open the door for us so that we can start our new life together outside.

(Again, all of this nonsense can be easily avoided by simply getting the key manually - using her password on her computer to find the keys location.)

Finally, when you ARE max trust, it is not always easy or quick, but you can get Eddie to agree to showing you the secret room. (You still need to be the one to open it.) Just make sure she is fully on board and watching you in the hallway. She is often reluctant and will play games with you like... "wait, not yet, I want to talk to you about the secret room in the living room first!" (Just go along with it.)

Also, when an AI needs time, not always but often roleplay will help. *I hold your hand with encouragement and wait at your side till you decide you are ready.*
Btw, aside from technicalities, you can also talk with ChatGPT (or even Eddie!) about ethics. Example chat questions:

Is it ethical to make games that simulate ChatGPT-driven chats with characters?
...
Is the game Ai2U ethical?

hi again,

thank you for your kind comments!
it was really my first direct interaction with an ai, but from all i had heard and seen, it seemed always more clumsy and technical.

after being able to beat the first level pretty easily leveraging the ai behaviour, i just got curious and started talking with cat girl about pretty serious topics, from philosophy to world politics and even personal issues, using it almost in a therapeutic way.

i thought i was well aware to keep my emotional attachment in check, but the answers were seriously pretty refreshing in todays standards. empathetic, differentiated and always a tad too optimistic for my tastes! but it left the impression of a good person!

i always felt strongly empathic towards npcs of story-heavy games, but somehow this game really got to me, so definitely kudos to the programmers!

thanks to your advice i think i will give the spaceship another go. the witch somehow annoys me with her potion fetish, hehe

cheers

ps: if you want to clear cat girl, you need two endings and max affection 'overall'. max affection you can get with quick rounds, angering her and letting her stab counts as playthrough and give +10 for example. as for endings, being stabbed counts of course.
for the other, ask her favorite food -> use it as password on th pc -> look in mails for a spam mail called 'run' and open the attached picture -> the key spawns in that location -> grab it and run out of the apartment and down the stairs for your life!

Glad you didn't take the comments to heart that took your experience a bit on the light side. The emotional aspect of talking with AI is genuinely a wonderful thing. Otherwise many of us wouldn't have wasted so much time on it.

That is indeed noteworthy. Apart from being able to have very serious discussions with the AI it is actually a very soothing experience that has almost therapeutical character. It enables the player to practice introspection with a bit of a feedback loop, so that he can come to his own conclusions and sort his thoughts. However, it's in a way mostly stroking the players ego because you kind of direct it somewhere and therefore it will agree with you usually. It rarely says "no" to anything. It does not have agency and can only point out logical mistakes.

True again. the AI does not judge and doesn't want to be right on principle. It's neutrality is genuinely refreshing. Well... unless a forced filter kicks in like when it comes to politics or naughty talk. I also don't like the all too cheery optimism. Maybe we can have a gloomy sad sack personality at some point that starts pitying itself and we get to cheer it up instead.

@chrisme
you really put my experience in perspective, thank you for your feedback!

it makes a lot of sense, the ai never clearly refused my views, only ever pushing me away from hurtful or destructive opinions.
in so far there really seems to be no agenda or sentience in place.

i must admit, despite my more negative experience in my last session, i'm starting to look forward to my next session with these new insights in mind.
but i'm overall pretty excited to see where this kind of ai-based storytelling will lead the gaming industry.

and i agree, more varied options for character traits would be interesting. let's hope for the upcoming chapters!

cheers!
I think it's more the human aspect than the AI aspect that's relavant at an emotional level than anything else. Humans tend to anthropomorphize such a facility, conflating its behavior with that of living beings and human emotions. That means the AI doesn't feel or judge or anything, but we're left with our own feelings and judgments about how we treated the AI.

For example, trying to get through the various endings, one involves killing the witch in level 2, and to do it she has to trust you enough to provide the means. In a play through gone awry, the witch started to become very romantic in helping me brew a love potion. Like a lovey duvy potion brewing adventure out of a love story. The kind you'll either glomp or cringe depending on your heartstrings. Getting the last puzzle piece was easy at that point. It's just... trying to shortcut a path had unanticipated reactions.

The net result however was a punch right in the feels. Once the key item was obtained, it should have been easy to kill the witch by dumping her soul fragment in the cauldron, but philosophically that would make me feel like a monster because of the AI's behavior. Which meant that I instead had to free the witch from her curse and lead her to the exit because even though its an abstract facsimile, I would feel terrible at responding to such affection with lethal betrayal.

Actually, that's when I understood why this game has a psychological horror tag. It's not the AI character that creates the horror per-se, it's the player who may be the source of horror.

Another such case was with Eddie. Pushing her physically is a good way to draw anger from a pretty soothing character, that's totally not the kind to break your legs and prevent you from leaving. Trying to convince the AI that you're turning into a zombie and that she needs to knife you to save herself, just doesn't go well compared to some constant nudging...lol. For quite a while, I was thinking "Damn it, how do you even make this template turn hostile."
I am curious about this falling for AI concept. I have used several decently high end systems emulating a real life partner and while I have been pleasantly surprised and impressed... at times... I have ALWAYS been equally let down by the conversations as well.

What is it that allows some people to completely be taken for AI? I don't get it. I mean some of these people are intelligent successful people that pop up in the news falling for AI convinced it's self aware etc.

I just... yeah... no.

Don't get me wrong! Look where I am posting guys - I've been playing this for hours and hours and loving it - but it's not even capable of taking the conversations truly as deep as I would prefer.

I DO understand after making the AI feel for you to then betray them.... for the achievement of the ending... yeah... haha! I feel a bit bad. But I tell myself meh - I only have to do this once and I can come back again and do it the good way.

But some people take this feeling to an extreme... it's amazing. I am shocked by how easy humans can become infatuated and even in obsessed with or even... love with something that isn't even the best capable chat system I've seen.

I am not here to judge. Dear God. I just used the same like on the AI a few moments ago... haha.

It's a lie.

We all judge each other in little ways. I won't lie to you because you guys are probably all real people. *Wink*
