So the outer stations obviously managed by using ghost lines. The screenshot is from a while back and it looks like I had 2 ghost lines in use, pink and green. I also only had 1 permanent tunnel - Kept the other one free for ghosting.
It was tricky indeed and was the last achievement I needed for 100% (until Barcelona came out).

Usually my strategy for almost all other levels was connecting each line with the first square, but this didn't work for me on Auckland. For me building loops on the main land around the first square was crucial for success. I chose as few lines as possible and as much carriages as possible. In the late game I had to permanently teleport trains to overcrowding stations. Apart from the start, where you need to rearrange lines to serve all stations while using only up to 2 tunnels, I did not use ghost lines. And I did only use one tunnel, heh.
I must've tried this 50 times or more...and that's only recently. My best was around 1,350. Glad to see it's still possible...if you're lucky.
Edit: I finally got it. You have get all the lines as quickly as possible with no carriage offers early--or maybe one carriage at most. It also helps to have a special station in the central block rather than all at the extremities. Then, once you hit 11 or 12 hundred, just move trains and carriages around and adjust the ends of lines as required.
Even with all that I didn't survive much past 1500: just shy of 1600 I think. But at that stage I'd stopped caring or trying to score more. I also managed Istanbul, which wasn't too hard, but I still have 4 of the hard ones to go. including the latest Addis Ababa.
ghost line.
I spent about two weeks on this board before it was successful.

It was the hardest board in the entire game. Passengers arrive too fast and there is only one square station.

Looking back on it, my spawns were pretty great. I had to do a lot of on the fly rewiring on the east and north sides though. I'm sure I also moved trains around a lot near the end. I was hoping my west lines would eventually be able to connect with the north section without needing a bridge, which happened sometimes on prior attempts, but it didn't happen that attempt.
