convoluted??? listen, it's simple.

David joins the special forces and they bully him and call him a snake, so he upgrades his stats by rescuing gray fox from galzburg south africa, also known as Heaven (Outer Edition), then he shoots his CO with a rocket launcher. He rescues his radio operator's brother from Coward Duck and finds Metal Gear himself, and blows up its feet using zelda bombs in a very specific pattern.

Then, the timeline twists and Snake is tasked with raiding a metal gear transport tanker and taking out Higharolla Cockamamie, who is a fake person who is actually Boss (Big), his CO from the first game who is now a cyborg and you have to put bombs on his feet. Snake David uses a guided pacman missile to shoot Metal Gear Again until he wins the video game.

Finally, Snake is called by the colonel from the Rambo movies to go to afghanistan (named after africa) to keep Big Boss, who is rebuilt yet again into an eyepatch sean connery, from controlling the global economy using a petroleum-producing algae called Oilix. Gray Fox is now an evil person named Gray Fox, who accidentally kills his own girlfriend while trying to shoot Snake with a big metal gear gun. For this, Snake kills Plastic Gear throws all his inventory items in a dumpster and beats Gray Fox with his bare fists until he explodes. In an epic showdown with sean connery big boss, mel gibson snake destroys him forever using a hairspray can.

Snake then gets radio'd away from his Balto marathon in Alaska to go to Shadow Moses IceWorld. The US government is deadlocked in negotiations with Snake's own clone, who is british and was raised in battlefields across Kurdistan. Because Liquid British Snake is a clone, he has a Clone Disease from being too much of a clone, and wants the body of Jango Fett to cure his mandalorian battle genes. Snake reveals that in actuality, Big Boss is the origin of the clone army on kamino, and that he himself was Big Boss's Own Offspring, codenamed Big Boss Junior by the Shadow Organization known only as the La-Le-Lu-Le-Lo Patriots, who cloned Big Boss to control history from the shadow realm. Snake (real version, not Liquid or Big Boss) eventually fights through the various offspring and adoptive battle children of the dead Big Boss, in order to save America's destiny from his own British genes. Gray Fox is re-animated as a Frankenstein Cyborg who dies defending Snake against metal gear british, but Snake himself was poisoned by Gray Fox's adopted sister for killing Gray Fox in that one game, but the poison only works on Liquid instead. After destroying Liquid, Snake and his friends Otaku Convention (one guy) and Meryl from Policenauts escape to find themselves hunted by shadow organizations forever, but instead of embracing despair Snake instead talks about how beautiful caribous are.

Multiple years go by and snake is diving onto a metal gear tanker from that NES game no one played, but now, it's named after the ship from 2001 a space odyssey, and otaku convention is named after hal 9000, and snake is named after david bowman. this is not important at all because one of the bosses from the previous adventure, ocelot, reveals himself to be possessed by the luigi's mansion ghost of liquid snake. This person of Ocelot was the only boss of the previous game to not get killed by Snake or Snake's germs, and is the only unresolved plot point left in the entire franchise. Until ocelot blows up the entire ship to steal Metal Gear of War and snake apparently drowns before he can get pictures of it to the local newspaper and J Jonah Jameson.

Multiple years go by (again) and now the game follows the character of Snake who is renamed to Raiden and wears an assortment of colored wigs to power himself up. Raiden is ordered to investigate Big Shell, a facility built on top of the tanker that's using oilix to pump more oil into the Hudson Bay for no reason. Raiden slowly realizes that the President of the United States is his adoptive father, which he somehow forgot about, and that the President faked his own death to assume the mantle of Sons of Liberty, posing as Snake (david) by utilizing the fact he is the secret third clone brother Solidus Snake to deceive others that he is Solid Snake David. Solidus is one of the big boss clones the shadow government put in charge of America to control history, but he doesn't like taking orders from Clippy so he tries to destroy America and rebuild it in the name of personal freedom to author your own reputation and legacy. For this, Raiden kills him with a samurai sword while a robot implanted into his own memories informs him that he himself is a fake persona created by the military to fight. After otcaon's stepsister is killed by a cyborg vampire, Solid Snake, who is still alive, congratulates Raiden on killling the president for robots, and says that all persons must decide for themselves what to make of their life and the history of the world. Raiden listens to his ipod and goes on a date with rose from titanic, who he didn't know existed for sure but now possibly does. See, Raiden was trained using a simulated reality recreation of metal gear 1 called Metal Gear Gameboy to only know some of the metal gear plot points but not enough to keep him from being used by the Patriots, who Solid Snake learns died 100 years ago. Snake then scurries off to rescue the daughter of Olga Gurlokovich, who is a russian mercenary woman pretending to be gray fox that solidus killed with a p90.

Then, in dvd extras, Raiden gets the ability to time travel into the 1960s where he attempts over and over to foil the plans of a young big boss in a hapless manner similar to team rocket from pokemon. Big Boss, who is at this point Small Boss or John Jack or Snake (Naked), is sent into Russia to extract rocket scientists for America, who wants to go to the moon to play policenauts. Sadly, he runs into an undercover Cobra (different kind of snake) unit, which trained him on how to do ps2 melee combos on guards. This unit defects to Russia under leadership of Boss (normal size), who is a woman who single-handedly won WW2 all by herself. She was also an astronaut who believes in the Spaceship Earth, so Snake dresses up as Raiden's Russian Uncle, Raikov, who is a lover of Volgin, who has sith lightning so Snake kills him in a boss fight against a a pre-Metal Gear tank called Shagohod. While escaping from Russia, Snake eventually is confronted with Boss, who reveals she is actually a US loyalist and that snake is here to tie up loose ends and delete her from history. Snake doesn't comprehend the story of metal gear because he isn't the writer of the game so he shoots her to death and flies away with a Chinese Spy named after eve from the bible, who steals snake's wallet and the wallet of the patriots.

Then, snake gets kidnapped by his old special forces unit, which is now under the command of Gene, a character who has mind control powers who wants to build a nation of warriors called Heaven (Army). After shooting him to death, snake steals his wallet of patriot money and decides to build MSF, which is the same idea as the guy he just killed for having that idea. Ocelot then steals another wallet from a US official, so he can buy expensive things after that point in the timeline.

Finally, David Snake returns after two acid games about himself being an amnesiac clone aged him into being 90 years old super fast. Turns out, Liquid Snake's clone disease was for Snake himself too, and he now has 1 year to live. Metal Gear (Snatcher sega cd version) is now a chicken sized robot driven by otacon 9000. Snake hunts down Ocelot, who is the mgs3 boss' son, and who is still alive and still possessed by Liquid's ghost, but now with the context of mgs3 we know that Ocelot's father Sorrow was himself a ghost, meaning Ocelot is doing this on purpose. Using ghosts and the military industrial complex, Ocelot wills the global economy to his own bidding and builds a doctor evil submarine out of snake characters but assembled into mount rushmore. Enraged, Snake David (Old) destroys Ocelot's computers and fist fights him to death to trumpets. Big Boss, who has been dead for several decades, is alive and explains that all of metal gear solid was the result of handing the economy over to learning algorithms who simulated warfare too well and made everything in the economy into warfare things instead, by putting war thunder commercials in youtube videos and things like that. The weight of this confession being lifted causes Big Boss to die, but not before killing his mgs3 officer for being evil offscreen.

In MSF in the 1970s, snake fights monster hunter enemies and monster hunter versions of metal gear enemies with explosives for 3 dozen hours, all while recruiting random side characters for mgs5. Eventually he takes on the identity of Big Boss and alienates himself from all world governments by saving the world in a very convoluted way involving an AI generated ghost version of MGS3 Boss who dies again. After building Metal Gear Anime to protect himself from the government and shadow government, it turns out that Snake's MGS3 commander has turned evil offscreen and hired an Anime Woman to bring MSF to heel under the shadow government. Big Boss shoots her and she is blown out of the vehicle, across the ocean, and into US camp omega where metal gear solid V (not 5) starts.

Back in the 2010s, Raiden is now a robot and he fights Steve from ghost babel over who gets to control where America invades with its military. Steve is using video games, like minecraft, to train kidnapped pinocchio children how to play video games better, which Raiden kills him for, ending the series forever.

Big Boss in the 1970s, who is now in charge of MSF and trying to kidnap the Peacewalker Anime Woman so he can kill her once again, is bamboozled by the US government's XOF, who exists as an inverse function to undo all the history that Big Boss does. XOF is led by skullface who destroys MSF and uses otacon's dad, Huey, to make Metal Gear Man. He also kidnaps a navajo code talker who makes 1984 newspeak parasites that can author and re-author all of human history by destroying whole languages. Big Boss is shot down by XOF and explodes, and this is where this video game begins.

What about any of this is convoluted or hard to keep track of?

Absolutely. Original Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear still beat Raven Shield, let alone anything that came after it. Original Ghost Recon or Jagged Alliance 2 still hold the candle (despite JA 3 being really good and faithful to the original) and Close Combat 4 is as fun as it ever was. Deus Ex 1, System Shock 2 and (to many) Diablo 2 are still unparallaled.

Tech might get old, but good and great game and \ or art design never gets old.

That's what happened with MGS 3 HD to the point of it being barely bearable for me. Remake looks okay and is playable... but most likely much more when using the controller. The Keyboard control scheme was horrible and I gave up after first few maps because it was a chore to play. That's why we need remakes \ remasters. That's why it's worth to wait.

Still, I chuckled and enjoyed the paraphrase.
