METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

Will beating Peace Walker be required to understand the story?
I have never been a huge fan of the MGS series, people seemed to take a plot that was clearly intended to be 50% comedic way too seriously. Regardless MGSV seems like it may be a fantastic game. I have only beaten MGS:Twin Snakes, MGS2 and MGS3, but I understand Peace Walker continued with a significant chunk of Big Boss's story. Will it be required to have any clue to what's going on? And I never beat MGS4 either. Thanks in advance!

Yes.

I wouldn't say that 50% of the story was intended to be comedy. MGS story is very serious and complex, but parts of gameplay have some comic relief. If I remember well, Kojima said, that these funny "gags" , or whatever you wanna call it, are there to relax the player from dark story.
You can always look on youtube for PW story compilations, if you don't want to play it. But yea, it would be good to know PW story before going for GZ and TPP.

But there is such frequency to the ridiculousness MINOR SPOILERS FOLLOW, like when Eva backflips her motorcycle off of Ocelot's chin, or Raiden fights like 20 woman soldiers with a sword in his mouth. Or like how Big Boss(I mean Venom Snake) has a HORN in the new one. And all of Revengeance was so ridiculous that it couldn't have been taken seriously. I always viewed it as being a series that was meant to be taken light heartedly for the most part, but with some compelling characters and scenes. Because the series' plot and fights are far too silly a lot of the time to be taken as some dark and edgy commentary on the physical and psychological horrors of war.

Well, I agree that there are a lot of cliche scenes, like you said, but MGS story for me, is more then those scenes. Every MGS game have different themes, for example, MGS1 theme is "genes", TPP will be "race and revenge" as I heard. So, you need to go deeper to really understand the story, especially MGS2, which had awesome and ludacris story at the same time :) Afaik, Kojima is a movie geek, so those action scenes are some kind of hommage to action movies, but yea, they are cheesy :). And as for Revengence, it's a spin-off, so I don't really see it as a part of MGS saga. The only thing that connects it is a few characters and thats it.

I fully understand the story, it still is over the top and ridiculous. Not that that is a bad thing, but either the games need to be taken with a humorous smile, or it's bad storytelling after a certain point. Far too many retcons and bizarre tone shifts to be considered good story telling and writing. And Revengeance has Raiden, the main character of 2 in it, and Kojima considers it part of the lore, so it certainly counts. Sorry if I'm coming off as aggressive, I don't mean to. I just don't get how someone can watch Raiden fight 20 people with no arms and a sword in his mouth and not go "Woah this is completely silly and ridiculous". Not that it makes the games bad, I've beaten the first three so I clearly like it, but I don't take the series seriously at all. I enjoy it as sumpremely high quality crazy nonsense with great art design and some good characters. And maybe a little heavy on the cutscenes lol.

Edit: Lol what are you talking about Torgrim?

You will have to at least read the story of Peace Walker AND Ground Zeroes, in that order.

So I got Peace Walker for the PSP, where did Kaz come from? He wasn't in 3 unless I'm forgetting something. Btw I like the bad*** base building and recruiting in this one, but the PSP control scheme makes my fingers want to bleed lol.

I would say you need to play it or listen to som codec stuff and the storyline. I think the only thing from mgs3 is the boss.

If you talk with him during the codec before missions he tells you, they were fighting eachother and snake won so Kaz tried to kill everybody but Snake stopped him and took him with him.

But yeah the basebuilding and recruiting in the psp sucked....and still I loved it cause its base building and I played it at least 100 hours to get the perfect base.

This one looks much beter.
You should buy Portable Ops as well.

yes, and i can't play because I do not have PS3! psp is unplayable for me..

As someone who has finished all of the MGS games except Peace Walker I think you should really finish all of the MGS games before playing this one. There are a bunch of references in MGS 4 to its predecessors. No doubt MGS 5 will be no different.
TheIronicTea 11 listopada 2014 o 12:42
Peace Walker is the worst MGS title - skip it. Nothing really happen happens in it, and the plot is ridiclious and almost messed up the perfect ending in MGS3. You can watch a video synopsis on the game or read the lore quickly in about three minutes. The gameplay is bad too, especially the mech bosses are tedious.
