METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

Do you think it's worth getting a PS3 just to play MGS4?
As the topic says; it's something I've been thinking about, since I am in the middle of my quest to play through every Metal Gear game. My local game store currently has PS3's for $170, and I'd trade in my old 3DS.

I'm trying to think about what else the PS3 has that would justify the purchase. I would get the Metal Gear HD collection, naturally; probably the Ico/Shadow of the Colossus bundle; and probably Haze just as a novelty.

I need the internet to make decisions for me!

Nah
Since MGO2 went out the window literally, there's no reason not to watch MGS4 on YT.

I watched the first hour or so on YT and holy cow people aren't kidding. You spend so little time actually playing the game, and when you do get to play frankly it looks kind of boring and linear compared to the others. I just beat Snake Eater and playing through Peace Walker now and it looks like a big step back. I can't believe it got such good reviews.

Still I've been playing Ground Zeroes and it gives me high hopes for Phantom Pain, despite Keifer's performance.

No.

I bought a PS3 just to play MGS4 back when the game released. I found the game disappointing. Being a fan of MGS1 and MGS2 fan, it really was a let down. MGS3 was...ehhhh....alright, I guess. But MGS4...too cinematic. Too brown. Too much talkey-talkey, not enough 'GET TO IT-ness.'

4 used to have the best gameplay in the series (when you actually were playing the game, Act 1 and 2 primarily). Act 4 has a decent amount too.... but there aren't any human enemies except during one boss fight. The game has way too many and too long cutscenes and is easily the worst writing of the series, especially Meryl (who is basically nothing like she was in MGS1). Ground Zeroes is currently the best playing Metal Gear Solid game (say what you want about the length, the base gameplay is good) and Phantom Pain will be even better which you don't need a PS3 to play either.

Don't know how people call 4 the worst. It's arguably the best or mgs 3 is. Gameplay, story, characters, music, production quality is all top notch. There is a large disparity between the length of gameplay segments and cutscenes, but I loved the cutscenes, so I didn't care.

Anyways, don't buy a ps3 just for this.
MGS4 is the reason that made me buy a PS3,ofc i didnt do it only for MGS4 but for other games aswell and from what i can tell you MGS4 is amazing at its finest, for me its one of the best MGS game by far until TPP comes out,MGS4 has more freedom than its predecessors, more items, gadgets and other things to use,you can customize your weapons and do pretty much everything like in all MGS games that came out before Guns of the Patriots, keep in mind that there are also many ways for flanking your enemies around and lots of sneaking spots too,go out there, buy it,play it,enjoy it....i know i did :D
Just for Metal Gear Solid 4? I would say, yes. I got a PS3 just for that one single game, and then others came along. Might as well grab Demon's Souls, The Last of Us, etc.
If you get a PS3, you will probably get more games for it. I wanted to buy a PS4 just for GZ/TPP, but then it was announced for the PC so i saved myself some cash. But i will have to get it one day for Bloodborne.

Keep in mind that Metal Gear Solid 4 was made to give the series a closure. So there are a lot of cutscenes, and if you loved MGS1 and 2, you will probably love 4 and how it ends and wraps things up.

Since someone necro'd this thread,I'll respond to this.
While playing MGS4 I fell asleep.I'm not even kidding. The gameplay is so calm at times.

I agree with Centurio, that the PS3 is a little teeny weeny bit outdated, but for me MGS4 was most enjoyable and beautiful.

MGS4 was the reason I wanted a PS3 in the first place, if I remember correctly.

I'm super late...
anyway, a ps3 is worthwhile for it's many exclusives. MGS4 is not worthwhile, nor would I recommend playing or looking up it's cutscences BEFORE playing TPP. Really, you will not miss anything but spoilers and confusion considering TPP will break continuity to some extent. (also, MGS4 heavily depends on MGS1-3 for the player to get the intended experience)

HOWEVER, the HD collection is on the ps3...
MGS3 is a must play, not only for how great it is, but how important/pivotal it is to the whole universe. (really, that thing is the equivalent of the book of Genesis on the Bible) There is also PW, which is a worhtwhile game yet not a must since the important details are covered in GZ.

In conclusion, if you do not care for the many worthwhile exclusives on the PS3, and just care for Metal Gear, save money with emulation. ps2 emulator plus a Snake Eater ROM would be all you really need to prep for TPP.

How do you figure MGS4 to not be a worthwhile game?

Not a worthwhile game to justify the purchase of a ps3 is what I mean. MGS4 is lacks the weight if the player has not yet played the past games himself.(by itself it is not worthwhile) I don't hate it, I did mostly enjoyed it. It has lots of positives along with it's significat share of negatives. I just don't feel that the game itself justifies purchasing a console. Now not only is it irrelevant to the latest MGS games, but TPP will somehow break continuity. In turn affecting the events of MGS4.

Considering how cinematic the game is, unlike the rest of the MGS games, watching the cut scenes share a whole lot about the game itself. Also, I felt like half of the gameplay time was just easter egg/past game references madness. So YouTube can almost replace the game itself. Again, this only applies if MGS4 is the reason to purchase a ps3. If the player already owns one(ps3), or is planning to purchase it anyway, MGS4 should be played. (though I see no point in playing it prior to TPP)

Yes it is worth it. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise.

What if I've already played through MGS3? Would that bring back the worth?

Can you really trust this man?

I agree with what the man said, but the man himself is kinda sketchy.
