METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

Should i start with this game?
do i need to play the other games first to know the story? I dont like how old metal gear solid 1 is and its controls and visuals make me sick.

You should definitely start with V if you don't have any tolerance for retro frustration, specially outdated control schemes.

But, you should get the bundle with Ground Zeroes if you can, it gives a fair bit of context on the whole "revenge" theme of the story, even if the story is not the best on as a sample for the overall MGS series. But graphics and gameplay are the best, so even if you ignore the story is still one of the best stealth action games out there.
what guy above said.

but MGS3 controls arent as bad if you focus on stealth gameplay. if you get the crouch walk mod its even better.

MGS3 is first in order, and if you get through that, your playthough of MGSV will be better just because you will be playing in the more....traditonal MGS play style...

so many just run and gun this game and go "whats the big deal"

try doing it without ANY guns and come back to me saying it was easy.
As a stand alone game (really Ground Zeros would be worth getting as well as it is tired with The Phantom Pain it, and do the extra stuff), and a stand alone story the game works. (story wise).

There will be allot that you don't know be tied into other things. Even if you play the other main games, you will still be somewhat confused as to the full story, because it is soooo F-n' convoluted. (by design, to give the player of being apart of something bigger then them).

There is allot of story stuff to dig into if you want but with MGV the story is more in the background then past games. Gameplay is phenomenal.

I would say go ahead and play the game. If the characters and story grab you at all go and play to other games. They are all worth checking out and are great games in their own right.

Really the game is super fun once you dig into the gameplay.

I had this game sitting in my game collection for years and did not play it until recently. (I have played the Metal Gear games since the NES). Now mind you I love the games but they can be daunting to follow story wise. So much so I have to really be in the mood to play them.
Wait for MGS Delta and play that instead. MGSV is just a filler game with pretty much only 1 important reveal that matters to the story and connects to Metal Gear (1987).

If you took MGSV out of the storyline, you really wouldn't be missing out on much. It's made that way on purpose though because it's all a ruse so that the real Big Boss can create the real Outer Heaven unhindered. Venom Snakes story is just a distraction for Big Bosses enemies. Gameplay is great though.

delta, then peace walker, then this. Im old enough to have played them when they came out. nes metal gear then mgs1 mgs2 then snake eater, then the ps3 one, peace walker, then this. this is fun but without peace walker there is no emotional connection.

i respect your take but i think i cared more about peace walker and this than the rest. for me this was the real tragedy. the others were great in their own way but this impostor story was so interesting.

I think the story is fine with V.

Timewise there is not a ton going on. So the story is going to reflect that. But I like the idea of Venom Snake (Freaking Soap Opera). Like what type of person would basically erase their life, to replace it with a lie?

What type of life did he walk away from? (Answers left for the player to come up with, as anything Metal Gear released after The Phantom Pain can eat a ♥♥♥♥)

The gameplay is just butter. I don't mind the change in how the narrative is told. I like the slower more open ended pace of the game. But I can see why it was not as highly regarded compared with other games. It was just different.
