METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

Is the story that dumb?
So I never got into Metal Gear since I never owned Playstations back in the day, but this series' story is consistently touted as like the most based in all of gaming for some reason. So I watched a lore video and as far as I can tell, this is the entire story:

Big Boss hates the CIA/Patriots for making him kill The Boss, so he creates a large PMC and body double figurehead. Solid Snake then kills the body double and incapacitates Big Boss on behalf of the Patriots. Big Boss is captured by the Patriots and kept in stasis while Solid Snake infects and kills Big Boss's loyalists, enemies of the Patriots and eventually even Big Boss himself with Foxdie. The Patriots however are unexpectedly killed by the Mary Sue scientist who invented Foxdie and nanomachines and so now the world and Solid Snake are "free."

All of this is stretched out over the course of like 10 games and obfuscated through multiple double and triple crossings and grating swaths of dialogue intentionally making the story sound more confusing and complicated than it actually is. As I understand it, this Kojima apparently wanted to make a TV show or movie instead of a video game series.

Furthermore, what exactly is so great about this? These games seem to just be about the player character super soldier killing everybody the CIA wants without thinking twice. How is that deep? How is that anti-establishment? It sounds just like COD, so I feel like I should just buy COD tbh.

What? The Cold War has tons of personal stories under the regimes of that era they're still digging up, about as close knit as you can get. And the Cold War had tons of cool stuff to look at like modern underground bases, absurd missile weapons on absurdly huge platforms, crazy airplane designs and superfast submarines. The spy planes like the SR-71, crazy spy missions like recovering a Soviet sub off the sea floor...

And people like the Jack Ryan stories more for the details than the heroics. You probably think that because they screwed the franchise up so bad after his death with the usual corporate crap. But in the time of Red October and Patriot Games, there were real details there to appreciate.

There's so much material there to work with it's amazing that Metal Gear used so little of it.
first of all, it is a game that should be played. secondly, 9 out of 10 games have a cheap story (I'm paraphrasing your words), and the 10th game does have a story, but it's more of an interactive movie where you watch and listen more than you play. and finally, the metal gear series is not about an hour-long video where you can learn what's going on there, but it's about how you get to that result, and moreover, the metal gear series is one of the few games that perfectly combines great gameplay with an interesting story.
and if you're looking for a great story that you haven't heard yet or isn't cheap, you'd better travel around the world or read a really thick book, and don't look for a story you only know a little about :D instead of enjoying the awesome gameplay. I myself became interested in the history of metal gear when I played Metal Gear Solid 4 for the first time, and by that time I had completed practically all the metal gears that had been released up to that point, so for me the fun gameplay was above all

im not going to bother going further
it's just 1984 + AI doomer lore
it's only meant to be an end cap of MGS which 1-3 are much much stronger in depth
there was too much cut tho when it has 10/10 design.. the story is absolutely shallow but a very welcomed entry into MGS, and multiplayer + fobs is plenty of hours of fun, as restricted as they are

not once in that explanation did you mention bi-pedal nuclear armed robots, super soldiar combat units, the cutting edge stealth espionage. rivaled only by james bond and tom clancy really.

you also, are supposed to go in and out un noticed, but have the freedom to play how you want.

if this is the first MGS game youve played, its got the best gameplay, best graphics maybe? but beyond that, it is sub par to probably every other Metal gear game.

BUUUUUUUT, that game play is solid, few things gameplay whys missing from MGS3/4 but beyond that. solid game.

although, i would suggest playing MGS3, or waiting for delta to come out if you have a decent computer.

and many would agree that MGS3 is the all around best MGS game. the gameplay, mechanics, story, sound track, voicec acting, cinematography, when you look at alllllll these things combiend, MGS3 just takes the cake, no matter how you cut it. MGS4 is great, amazing from what i hear. BUUUUT, being a solid snake game, its extremely convoluted....big boss games typically more approchable.

anyways. if this is your experience with the game, you need to play quite a few more to really get it....

really, REALLY, and i emphasize, EXREMELLRELELY. obstructs how that story impacts the viewer.

having to more or less experience this story from going on 20ish years?
some, it was 1987, most it was 1998, so like,
Yeah, im sorry but story aside, MGS3 does not have better gameplay than 5.. that has to be nostalgia talking. The gameplay in MGS5 is objectively the best in the series technically speaking, even if the story is not. I just marathoned the entire series.
