Will the mother base platforms continue to upgrade when not playing the game?

My R&D platform is gonna take like 2 hours to upgrade, can I close the game and come back later and it will be done? or do I need to be playing for those two hours?

I think it's game time, not real time... play a few missions.

Also, not tried it but I think the phantom cigar thing is supposed to advance time?

It's split.
Mother base construction/research times: You must play/idle the game for that long.
FOB construction: Doesn't matter if you're playing or doing something else.

It advances the time of day, not the time left till development ends.

You're not supposed to be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sitting there watching the grass grow. Nothing in the game depends on waiting for a platform to finish. All it does it let your unit level get bigger with more staff. And there's more ways to advance the level than just upgrading the platform. If you really can't find ANYTHING to do, stop playing the game.
