METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

"The game lacks story"
Hearing this is really starting to frustrate me. Leading up to the release of MGS4, people always complained how long the cutscenes were in metal gear solid games and some even called MGS4 a movie.

Now Kojima decided to lessen the amount of cutscenes the game has, and focused heavily on creating a game (MGSV) with amazing gameplay. Now people complain about there being not enough story telling ?

Well, reading all these story complaint threads, not a single one of the OP's listen to the tapes in game. That explains a lot doesn't it. Want your indepth story telling ? play the cassette tapes.

Kojima wanted this game to be 'newcomer' friendly, so people who have never played an MGS game can play this and enjoy the gameplay, without being lost in a puzzle of what is going on in all the long cutscenes.

Kojima did a great job, period.

Peace.

Never played MGS before and i enjoy this one, even the story part, GJ Kojima

I found that the story is, while also found in gameplay, packed inside the tapes. It's up to the people complaining about there being "no story" if they want to listen and actually find more out about the story they care so much about.

EDIT: I do care very much about the story, considering I've been a fan for my whole life. I'm just annoyed at these people who are claiming to care but don't want to spend a little time to listen to a tape that will give them what they want.

This is exactly my point. These people are probably the same ones who made the "Metal Gear Movie" complaints.

Just never happy.

I always liked MGS series for the cutscenes. Gameplay was never a big thing for me in these game.

Yeah the tapes have story in them, and I've listened to all I have unlocked. Problem with this game is when there IS a cutscene, something will happen then its over just as fast as it started

I'll use quiet getting the neckless as an example, cutscene plays out, then they walk off screen...thats it..... Then appear back at the ACC and quiet is fine huh...ok?

This is my first ever metal gear game, and honestly I have no idea what in the ♥♥♥♥ is going on other than we're trying to track down this dude named Cipher.
There is story. In fact, the story aspect is exactly what you would expect from a Metal Gear Game. But instead of codec calls you get tapes, instead of long cutscenes, you get normal lenght cutscenes. Some of them are optional, some you can even miss depending on what you do, or not do. Some take place on mother base if some things are met.

Kojima focused on gameplay this time. He and his team have proven that they can do top-notch stealth gameplay, not just the story element.

Not to mention the game is based around you having a motherbase and doing contracts as a private army. So not all missions are story related.

I liked MGS for both gameplay aspect, and the story elements. But there was never enough gameplay for me. Playing the games for the first time, it's great. You play, you listen, you watch. But replaying them again is is a bit tedious with the amount of cutscenes going on. I always have to skip them just to play the game. The codec conversation in MGS3 at the beginning of the game lasts 30 minutes. 30 freaking minutes.

The gameplay in MGS games was always top notch for me. So yeah, i enjoyed both aspects. MGS4 delivered on the story content, and the game was made like a movie on purpose. To give Solid Snake, and the whole story a closure. They did a fine job in it. This time, you get more gameplay, less cutscenes. And those cutscenes that are in the game, are good.

Don't get me wrong the gameplay is amazing but I always liked the linear story and which is why I liked every game, (Except the NES ones because I swear those pits were ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥); I expected the cutscenes and I expected the "Tactical Espionage" from this title and got alot of missions that consist of me killing people and being Snake but not having any of the actual story. I know the tapes explain the story of the missions but it's not really satisfying. It's like eating a bag of chips compared to a meal, sure the chips will fill you up a little but the meal will always be more satisfying. I need my whole entree of Political Issues and World Dominating War Mongers, not just little pieces of story info. Now I am NOT saying KONAMI did a bad job on the game, the game is stunning and I see alot of effort was put into it, The wide open landscape of Afghanistan is amazingly done, and enemy placement is very well done, but I just miss the masterpieces that Hideo Kojima beautifully constructed but I feel that Konami pressured them into rushing the game or something. I want to know more about the Psycho Mantis-y Girl and I want to know more about what will happen with Diamond Dogs and the Spread of Mother Base but it just wasn't there. If you read this whole thing and understand my feeling I'm glad, but if ypu didn't are just going to argue like a fanboy that's fine too whatever floats your boat, so hopefully you understand my frustration and see that I have a valid reason but hey, what do I know I'm just a Metal Gear Solid Fan.

Game was far from rushed. It's been in development for over 5 years.

i never had a problem with the cutscenes except for that one time i was almost late for work because of it....but im missing them big time... it just seems TPP is a whole lot of the same repetitive save this guy and extract this guy missions its honestly getting boring as hell. Im really hoping the main story is friggin awesome as we get deeper into it.

People will always want to complain about something. Can't stop them. Once a single reviewer mentions their opinion on something like this, you start hearing the same crap from every other gamer acting like they had an original thought.

usually people on here try to act as some sort of authority always writing "as a long time mgs fan" lol Game is great, and idk how people can smack talk this game. And people who complain about graphics lol, the animations and gameplay is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ amazing. The graphics are good too! And if you're running the game at 4k then the game will be beautiful.

never played a mgs game before. i love the story and the themes and the characters. the people saying it is bad are just b8ing let them be. the person saying it on the first page hasn't even got this game and has high hours in fallout 3 so you know what kind of gamer he is.
It's kind of lame that we have to listen to tapes which aren't even voice acted on a cutscene level just to get some story out of it but one thing I can tell you for sure is that this game will suffer for it in the gaming ranks this year

It was very much rushed in it's final develop time. 2 story missions were cut out, and it's clear a lot of the late game story missions are just harder versions of older ones, even keeping the same debriefing screen and dialogue. :/
