Snake Or Big Boss
Forgive me if I dont know all the story, lore behind MGS. But when is snake, just normal snake, and when is he big boss, or has he always been big boss.

As I said. Forgive me if I dont know all the story. But I always thought snake to be a good guy. Hero. But big boss is just a A hole.

Its kind of like finding out Luke is Darth Maul, Or batman is really lex luther junior or something.

I understand the whackness of MGS games. But the one thing that really bugged me is. The whole snake is big boss. Its like to create this hero, this nice guy, that suddenly is the evil guy, boss character, seems kind of strange to me, its hard to really relate to the character,

Luke is Darth....WUT? terrible TERRIBLE analogies!...NO...BAD! in MGS 5 TPP its Big Boss...but as for those analogies....just dont..

In 1964 Snake had an infiltration mission in the soviet jungle, he had no gear so his codename was Naked Snake. *long and awesome gameplay* his mentor "The Boss" betrayed him and the USA, at least Snake and all others thought that she betrayed them. After the end fight with The Boss snake got back and was awarded with the title "Big Boss". He didn't like the name and wanted to be called Snake.

So Big Boss and Snake are the same person. Although Snake uses the name Big Boss later in the series. When you no longer play as him but as one of the clones of him, Solid Snake.

Edit: Thats just a super short version, if you want to know more, watch some Youtube videos where it is explained. Or play the games ;)

Yeah I know in MGS Phantam its big boss. But my head is spinning, was it always big boss, or did he turn into big boss. Sorry for bad analogies. Its just. My point is. Good guy turns into bad guy. As I remember in MGS 2, big boss was a real A Hole.

Suddenly? His story ark spans over several games: MGS3, then Portable Ops (arguably), then Peace Walker, and now MGS5 :)

Well, if star wars is how you will understand; Solid Snake is Boba Fett (if he were a clone trooper), Big Boss is Jango Fett

In Metal Gear Solid 3 he is Naked Snake, after the events of MGS3 he is deemed the title of Big Boss

I dont mind complex stories. As I watch game of thrones, i loved and know the Deus Ex story, in and out. But this has always boggled my mind about big boss. Not complaining. I love MGS series. Just saying. Its always confused me. Thats all.

Naked Snake, Venom Snake, Punished Snake, Big Boss = The main character of MGS3 and MGS5.

Solid Snake, Old Snake = The hero of MGS2 and Big Boss's clone from the Les Enfants Terrible project.

Liquid Snake = Another clone. Antagonist of MGS1.

Solidus Snake = The last complete clone, and the antagonist of MGS2.

There's more to it than that (failed clones, more games they were featured in, etc) but this should clear up the confusion.

It's not hard to understand. He was called "Naked" Snake because he went in to the mission with bare minimum gear. Snake is just his code name. He doesn't like being called 'Boss' or 'Big Boss' because of the circumstances that earned him the title.

he was given the title of Big Boss because he defeated his former master that taught him the art of CQC (Close Quarter Combat) and in doing so he took her title as boss.. I would tell u the story behind the original boss but i suggest you play MGS 3 for yourself its a good story that i recommend.

Snake eater was a name of an operation. Big boss.. In that time codenamed naked snake was alone on the solo mission without any back up to retrieve philosophers legacy and kill the boss

So to make it straight..
Big Boss is one guy, he had many other codenames. Like Naked Snake, Venom Snake Punished Snake or just Snake. His real name is John..or Jack.. Anything. He is the main character of MGS3, Peace walker, Portable ops, and phantom pain. These games tell his story.

Solid snake is another guy, he's his "son" or..a clone that was created along with 2 other clones during the experiment to make another soldier as good as big boss..cuz he was probably very sexy and awesome. That's another story.. They also call him Old snake and his real name is David
