you get more awesomer. And less ammo. not sure what heroicness is for though. There's also usually a bit of materials in them.

From what I can tell you unlock more landing zones for piquad.

It just means you cleared the base. It repopulates later, all it does is tell you that you shouldn't be scared to run around anymore.
