What's the purpose of the customisable avatar?

I assumed at the start of the game it was just some joke on games with customisable protagonists, but now that I have Mother Base I have the option to redo the avatar on the customisation menu. I haven't seen this dude's face show up anywhere in the game but the customisation screen though. I assume this is an online thing?

In the videos i saw of the game, there were female operators in the game and I mean the game did say we were reconstructing "snakes" face not some woman's face SOOOOOO, try again next time.

Well...Snake is a male soldier...The reason they wanted to change his face is to protect him, is sex change really necessary in that context?

Does that story rationalisation for the customisable face come into play again later though? I mean it's Metal Gear, if they'd given me the option for a female avatar when the story was telling me they just wanted to change Snake's face for his protection I honestly would have shrugged it off. Two minutes later I was running away from Colonel Volgin's human torchified ghost, it's not like we expect Metal Gear games to be beholden to rationality.
