METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

Do I need to play MGS4 first
I don't have access to a PS3 to play MGS4 unfortunately, otherwise I'd definitely play it first. What I want to know is if it is essential to play MGS4 before I play Phantom Pain for story reasons(and of course I will go through Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes first). I want the best experience possible, and if that means going through MGS4 I will try to borrow a PS3 or, as a last resort, watch a walkthrough.

No, MGSV comes before MGS4

Nah, MGS5 is settled in the past. (even before MGS 1 (and before MG1 & 2, which came before MGS1)

You will want to Play MG3 Snake Eater first. Chronological that is the first game in the storyline. Then Peace Walker, then Portable Ops (If I remember rightly) then Ground Zeroes and THEN Phantom Pain for the full story.

they have tons of 15 min orless videos that explain the entire storyline and leave out mgsv

No.

The "essential" games you should play if you want to know the full lore are probably: MGS3, Peace Walker and Ground Zeroes.

MGS4 happens after TPP and is more about Solid Snake than Big Boss.

not at all. MGS4 is conscidered at the last in the series. MGS5 in somewhere in the middle

Honestly, you'd probably be fine just watching a full playthrough of 4. The rest of the games should really be played, though. This does include 1 and 2, too.

No MGS4 takes place much farther in the future and deals with Solid Snake and his story, this is Big Boss aka Naked Snake the original snake that liquid and solid snake were clones of. This story should have very little to nothing to do with 4. Now 3 that is one that happens before this one as well as that PSP/Vita game (i never played it) and Ground Zero's. Those are the only ones that happen before this game. Now fan service will most likely make connections to characters and or events that will come later in the story but definitley not needed to enjoy the game.

Ok, different question: Do I need to play Portable Ops? I know Peace Walker is essential, but what about that game?

You only really need to play the following (preferrabely in this order):
MGS 3 Snake Eater
MGS Peace Walker
MGS 5 Ground Zeroes

Most folks won't forgive Portable Ops and don't consider it canon. Having that said, it does take place before Peace Walker.
