METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

Exactly how will multiplayer work?
I've just watched an official teaser video for multiplayer and am now watching one on an infiltration mode. Basically my confusion is this: is it all co-op and invasions? Or is there PvP as well? I remember MGS IV multiplayer but very little. I just remember using boxes and getting shot anyway which was pretty hilarious. That's my main concern but if any of you have any juicy details to share I'd appreciate that too. Thanks!

I assume metal gear online itself will be more like a stand alone multiplayer game, where as FOBs will be a multiplayer extension of single player shenanigans.

In MGS4 you made a custom character that had to improve combat skills by using it. IE If you wanted a rank 3 knife skill you needed X amount of Knife kills. And you could unlock and buy customizations for your custom characters.

Game modes in MGS4 MGO were like Team Deathmatch, game modes where people had special characters, 1vAll game modes where 1 player had power ups like invisibility or whatever.

MGS5 has a feature called Motherbase.

Motherbase, when fully expanded offers the player the option to make FOBs (Forward Observation Base) which will gather more resources for Big Boss. The downside to making the FOBs is they become vulnerable to attacks from other players. It creates a 1v1 scenerio in which the attacker is invading someone else's base. Konami made it clear this base invading is separate from MGO. They are not related.

MGO has no official information beside the trailer that was released some time ago. At least non that I've heard of.

There are two different modes and we don't know much about either of them. There is the FOB system which is part of the main single player story. You use a MB coin to buy a plot of water for you to build your FOB on. When your FOB is completed you will gain extra resources but it will be invaded by other players dark souls style, you can defend it by upping security, going there yourself or inviteing a friend to help you.

You may lose some of the crates and guards you had in the FOB and if you capture the invader you can go to their base and reclaim them. FOB bases are purely optional and you can get them for free but you can expand them and make more by buying more MB coins or earning them in single player.

The other multiplayer mode is MGO3 the third version of metal gear online (god I miss 2) which is like most multiplayer modes in games like halo or call of duty (but actually fun) and has strange and insane gamemodes. One game mode is called Team Sneak which is like capture the flag only the defending team is armed to the teeth while the other team has stealth camo and tranq guns.

We don't know much else about them and there are probably more game modes for MGO3 but thats all I know right now.

According to the teaser video MGO goes live on release. I didn't know though that the FOB was separate. That's good that it's optional as well. I don't know much about how Mother Base will be helpful besides putting interpreters there so that you can understand the different languages you'll encounter in the game (or take along someone who can understand themselves) which is a small detail....but one I find impressive since no other game to my knowledge had this as a part of it. Either your character knew every language completely or it would happen in scenes and someone would just automatically interpret there.

MGO is Jan 2016 PC and Oct 6th 2015 on console.
Thank you for the link. That's a shame....seems like a long way off. But I'm glad enough the release of the main game is universal. I can always watch videos to see what it's like while I wait to play myself (and probably suck).

Mother Base houses your research and development facilities, other soldiers (which you can apparently send on small side ops? or, play as one of them, if you feel like not playing Big Boss), your support team whom you can call upon while in the field, your zoo (seriously, it's apparently for the animals that you Fulton away), what-not. One of the trailers noted that you should invest your monetary resources into upgrading facilities in addition to stocking it with personnel.

It's a lot less clear to me what's stored on FOBs, although they seem to be linked with gaining additional resources that you can then spend on whatever... if you can keep them, so there must be some mechanic where resources are stockpiled there to be at least temporarily vulnerable to theft.

Well you know what....I'm making an army of goats. I will Fulton every damn goat I see and create an army. No one will ever touch my things then. It's genius.

In all seriousness now though, are you able to upgrade situational awareness and armor for the men you pick up as well? Sure, the turrets and laser systems will help a bit but this is MGS. It's all about tactical and creative sneaking. From the vids, I got that making more rooms will help since they'd have to go a greater distance and I already assumed that you could upgrade the rooms and build watchtowers. But if you can't put specialized or upgraded guards in, everyone will pretty much steal everything with relative ease.

Man Kojima comes up with some of the weirdest yet funniest things to add in....but it definitely makes it interesting. And who knows? Maybe it'll be something they'll release later after the game is out. Found an article post about it and it made it sound like FOB was tied to MGO. It was a review article and it gave the game a solid (pun intended) 9/10. Got a headache reading that a lot of the scenes are going to focus on breasts and asses though.....those always annoy me. The women are oversexualized enough as it is. Quiet plays a big part of the story though according to it.
