In MGS4 you made a custom character that had to improve combat skills by using it. IE If you wanted a rank 3 knife skill you needed X amount of Knife kills. And you could unlock and buy customizations for your custom characters.
Game modes in MGS4 MGO were like Team Deathmatch, game modes where people had special characters, 1vAll game modes where 1 player had power ups like invisibility or whatever.
Motherbase, when fully expanded offers the player the option to make FOBs (Forward Observation Base) which will gather more resources for Big Boss. The downside to making the FOBs is they become vulnerable to attacks from other players. It creates a 1v1 scenerio in which the attacker is invading someone else's base. Konami made it clear this base invading is separate from MGO. They are not related.
MGO has no official information beside the trailer that was released some time ago. At least non that I've heard of.
You may lose some of the crates and guards you had in the FOB and if you capture the invader you can go to their base and reclaim them. FOB bases are purely optional and you can get them for free but you can expand them and make more by buying more MB coins or earning them in single player.
The other multiplayer mode is MGO3 the third version of metal gear online (god I miss 2) which is like most multiplayer modes in games like halo or call of duty (but actually fun) and has strange and insane gamemodes. One game mode is called Team Sneak which is like capture the flag only the defending team is armed to the teeth while the other team has stealth camo and tranq guns.
We don't know much else about them and there are probably more game modes for MGO3 but thats all I know right now.
Mother Base houses your research and development facilities, other soldiers (which you can apparently send on small side ops? or, play as one of them, if you feel like not playing Big Boss), your support team whom you can call upon while in the field, your zoo (seriously, it's apparently for the animals that you Fulton away), what-not. One of the trailers noted that you should invest your monetary resources into upgrading facilities in addition to stocking it with personnel.
It's a lot less clear to me what's stored on FOBs, although they seem to be linked with gaining additional resources that you can then spend on whatever... if you can keep them, so there must be some mechanic where resources are stockpiled there to be at least temporarily vulnerable to theft.
In all seriousness now though, are you able to upgrade situational awareness and armor for the men you pick up as well? Sure, the turrets and laser systems will help a bit but this is MGS. It's all about tactical and creative sneaking. From the vids, I got that making more rooms will help since they'd have to go a greater distance and I already assumed that you could upgrade the rooms and build watchtowers. But if you can't put specialized or upgraded guards in, everyone will pretty much steal everything with relative ease.
