With not playing even Peace Walker (or even reading the story) you can't really claim to understand the story.
I bet you didn't understand most of the tapes.
Metal Gear Solid 4 was made just for people who sticked with the series for all these years. All the nostalgic and depressive nods. It was an emotional rollercoaster that gave closure to the series. That, and nothing else. If you didn't stick 10 years with those characters, then of course you couldn't care about them, nor the story.
There is zero reason not to play games if they are not on your prefered system. In fact, nowadays you can emulate just about anything. Of course the results are far from perfect, because emulation is never good as the real hardware. Even if we got a port, it wouldn't support K&M, because it is simply impossible to play those games on that setup, save for maybe MGS1. MGS2 and MGS3 used pressure sensitive buttons with an overhead non-adjustable camera that only DualShock controllers supported, it also used smooth analog movement not possible on a keyboard.
I tried to play the Xbox version of MGS2 once, what a horrible disaster that was control wise.
I took a trip to the Zoo, flew back and she was back.
Granted, most of my platforms were lvl 70+
