However, rescued prisoners are sometimes women and they are the only way to gain playable female staff members, as of now. Once you unlock the combat team, you can play as anyone placed in it. This way you can play as a woman but you will temporarily change into Snake for important events.
Also, if you want to prevent losing important staff members such as women you want to play as, be sure to lock them with Private Contract so they don't get sent on dispatch missions, don't get stolen through FOB and are safe from deaths by other means.
