METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

Whoever designed "backup back down" should burn.
I am trying to 100% this mission and its driving me mad. Getting to all those vehicles fast enough is infuriating.

Anyone have any tips? I am fultoning them instead to save ammo (for the no supply drop task) and do fine until the prisoner in the jeep is revealed. I head to where he is (which involves you having to pass through all those damned enemies) and things go to hell from there. If I take my time trying not to get spotted, the vehicles that emerges from this area gets away. If I go in aggressively, then I get shot to bits trying to get that vehicle destroyed without plowing it with rockets.

there is an ambush point northwest... all vehicles pass this point except last 2 which come out together. It's easy once you get the spot... just takes time.

There is also an extreme version of this mission

It is a pain in the butt. i finished it with a bout 20 secs spared and i was super frustrated when i did. haven't played it since though with my upgraded gear, it will probably be easier.

Just wait until you get D-Walker. That makes it super easy.

Steam search option is awsome, dunno why people refuse to use it.
My old post:

Right, I had some problems with a certain optional goal so I'm sharing info about mission:

9. Backup, Back down

a. Eliminated an armored vehicle
b. Eliminated multiple fighting vehicles or gunships
c. Eliminate all armored vehicles without receiving a resupply or fire support
d. Secured the weapon the transport truck was carrying
e. Extracted an armored vehicle
f. Extracted 4 soldiers searching for the escaped prisoner
g. Extracted 6 prisoners
h. Extracted 3 tanks

The mission is actually super easy to "win", what's annoying is that you have to sit and watch the timer rolling 15 minutes.
And to "win" all you have to do is destroy or extract an armored vehicle (task a.).

I've already written in another thread that it's virtually impossible to hit ALL mission objectives and get S rank in one pass:
http://steamcommunity.com/app/287700/discussions/0/527274088400844846/

Even if it's possible, I suggest doing the first run for prisoners early and save other optional tasks for later. The task that was bugging me was d.
I kept missing to achieve it.

---------------------------------------

Basically, as it's mentioned in that another thread, you need to rush to get Cybernetics Specialist and extract the searching party as soon as possible because if you don't do it fast, they find and kill him.

After you save him and deal with 4 soldiers, missile, mine or disable and extract any armored vehicle (one is approaching the area just behind the searching party, a bit west from Lamar Khaate Palace) then proceed to rescue other 6 prisoners.

I believe their locations are in that other thread I linked.
For the one that's being driven on a jeep just snipe the driver in reflex mode or use EMP (EMN) mine if you have it. You may wait for the jeep at the road fork west of Wakh Sind Barracks since you'll be near after saving Cybernetics specialist.
Just to be sure, bring dog as the buddy with you so you don't search for prisoners at the map much.

Basically your first pass is aimed to do tasks a. (it's mandatory objective otherwise the mission will fail), f., and g.
It doesn't matter if you'll go during day or night, and as I said, the best buddy is dog, you want to find prisoners scattered at the map and are not chasing S mission goal.

---------------------------------------

The second pass is what I've replayed a few times till I found out that the optional objective b., secure the weapon, is probably wrong translation. It should be written "kill something with a weapon transported by truck". Not "secure"!

Anyway, Since I'm writing...

- Go during the night. While it can be done during the day too, not being seen provides a nice bonus at the end of the mission.

- SInce you need to do the job without any resupply, you need to bring 8 EMN mines and 8 ATB mines. BOTH! If you don't have them, leave the mission replay for later till you develop them. It's actually possible to do it with 4 of both of these, but why would you rely on a pure chance? So you'll start with support equipment looking something like this:
http://s28.postimg.org/5swy6pf19/pic1.jpg

- Drop on the north Land Zone, then run to the spot just near Yakho Oboo Supply Outpost, the spot on this pic:
http://s22.postimg.org/puvvpud41/pic.jpg
Why? Because first 7 vehicles all plan to pass through that point.

- At the middle of the road place one ATB (tank destroying) mine closer to Yakho Oboo Outpost and a bit away, also on the road place one EMN (EMP vehicle disabler) mine. Why is that?
Because there is a total of 10 vehicles you need to destroy or extract and you don't have 10 EMN mines to extract them all!
From Yakho Oboo Outpost towards north are coming armored vehicles you want to destroy (do extract one though for the optional goal e. unless you did it in the first pass already). But towards the outpost there will be two civilian vehicles coming, these you want to nick along with people and a weapon, otherwise you get minus heroism for killing a prisoner etc.

- After one of mines goes off, just replace it with another of the same type.
What happens next is that you'll destroy 3 armored vehicles, one by one (remember to extract one if you ddn't do it in the first pass!), fulton a jeep with two EMPed hostiles and a prisoner and also fulton a truck with it's driver. But before you fulton the tank, jump on it and pick a missile weapon with homing ability!

- That was 5 vehicles down, 2 more to go and are closing. You may run closer to Yakho Oboo Outpost so you have more time to destroy them when they come close. And with the missile weapon you nicked, it's easy, all you need to do is keep those focused while holding rightmouse buton till the launcher locks on them. You may also use mines if you want but the clock is ticking and you have to destroy/fulton both those vehicles before the time is up!

- If you dealt with all 7 vehicles before the time passed, 3 hostile tanks and a helicopter will enter the mission area. If you don't deal with all 7 vehicles and just one survived 15 minutes, the second wave of hostiles won't appear and you can forgeddit.

- Now it's easy. The first tank will park just opposite the landing zone you used, you're near, run there, sneak up to it, fulton it up. Do not destroy it! Extract it.
The helicopter also starts near there but if you missed it don't worry, just sit and wait till it returns and missile it down. With your newly acquired homing launcher. The drill - keep rightclick pressed and helicopter focused till the launcher locks on the helicopter then fire.

- All you need to do is to extract the two more tanks, you'll see on the map where those are patrolling all the time so run there and use EMN mine to disable them before extraction.

This will complete all remaining tasks.
Assuming you didn't get detected and didn't need 3456347653 hours to do all of this, the mission will be ranked as S. Nice, right.
So do it during the night and when mines explode near Yakho Oboo Outpost they'll send a pair of soldiers to check what's happening so put those to sleep and extract to get rid of annoyance.

The best buddy - Quiet. If you order her to shoot the closing jeep driver, she'll keep covering you all the time and basically will continue to shoot at mobs in the outpost and even get the outpost captured! :)
If you lost Quiet because of design crime, bring the dog to alert you on closing mobs. D Walker is also good if has the intercept head, but is expensive as hell.
The horse is utterly worthless in this mission so keep it at home.

I go into the mission at the point near where the vehicles are going to and take out the small outpost up there. I then place directional mines down on the rode to stop the vehicles then fulton them. Last time I did that mission only had to leave that position to get the last two.
Nix Sep 20, 2015 @ 10:07am
Bear in mind you don't need to destroy everything within the time limit, you only have to destroy ONE vehicle before time runs out. So just place a bunch of mines on the road and crouch in a dark corner, wait 15 minutes, run out of hotzone, gg, mission complete. ♥♥♥♥ rank but who cares, it's a ♥♥♥♥ mission anyway.

As OP typed... he is trying to get 100%
s_salmon2005 Sep 20, 2015 @ 10:11am
Do you need to do all the mission tasks in one go?
tkt.vvc Sep 20, 2015 @ 10:13am
Nope

It isn't as fun whining when you know others have done the same thing before.

chokepoint just outside supply depo as they take road north

I did it without magnetic mines , i blocked road with tank , they try ramming it , they stop , i foulton them

i did it with really basic gear and without stealth suit with really cheap 1000 deploy gear , and without rocket(you get free one in one of passing trucks)

All you need to have is vehicle foulton and a tank(you can get it from erlier missions somewhere)

if you can get magnetic mines you just plop them and nick them when its disabled tho 4 is not enough , you need at least 8

I did get S rank http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=513750084

Time was tight near end i had like 20-40 seconds left still

I managed to 100% only after I got the D-Walker and his Fulton Launcher. That fulton launcher is a fokking miracle.
SenMithrarin85 Sep 20, 2015 @ 1:12pm
Thanks for the tip about the ambush point! I waited there, blocked the road with my jeep and fultoned them every time they stopped.

D-walker is a big help on this one. I dont use him for damage much. But i use him ALOT for quick traversal. It helps.
Honzou Sep 20, 2015 @ 1:19pm
Or... If you ha e the second tier Fulton then you can just use a crappy launcher. First shot stops the vehicle. Rinse and repeat and free vehicles!!
