Side is as indicated by the poster above. Front, I noticed it only happens when you jump from a semi-high place. I'm not sure if there is a way to trigger it outside of that.
Be careful of the front roll. I love it, but you need to judge the height correctly. Too low isn't a problem, you just fall on your belly. It's too high that can jack you up. You fall on your belly HARD! If done in a wounded state it could kill you, but usually it jars you up pretty good. Every time I do it I'm like OUCH that hurt!
I would say it would be the equivalent of a single story building as judged by a multi-story building in the game or all those single story buildings in Afghanistan at Da Wialo Kallai that you can climb on top of. Space bar as you walk or run to the edge and front roll landing. If done in a run you just keep on running. It's quite slick.
