Actually I played the series since MGS1 on PSX, but OK ! I didn't read the VN though and if it's the same style as PW then I'm not missing anything I think !
And I dunno what you mean with it being a series staple, cause it's definitely not.
I think that PW was overall a better game than MGSV. The story felt more cohesive (I might feel differently if MGSV wasn't missing about a third of its content) and while it was vastly simpler in some regards, the multiplayer aspect was WAY more fun (coops blows FOB away any day) and you didn't have to worry about micromanaging GMP.
Hopefully Konami allows Kojima to actually finish MGSV via DLC or an expansion, because as it stands right now it's just too incomplete. A masterpiece unquestionably, but painful to see left in its current condition.

Peace Walker is much much better than the phantom pain.
Yes its worth it, and online coop offers a lot of fun. Japanese players are gods, they can stealth-solo missions designed for 4 players
Most of the ideas in MGSV were done in Peace Walker first. It provides excellent back story on Big Boss.
The only issue is playing it on the console... I have played the HD version on 360 and the original on PSP. The HD version is obviously better -- better graphics, a second analogue stick seriously changes the way the game plays (for the better) and makes some of the more frustrating boss encounters easier. But the issue is the game was designed for a portable system. No mission in the game takes longer than 15 - 20 minutes to beat the first time through. They are also rather repetitive, and somewhat linear.
These almost feel like a plus when you only have 15 minutes to play on a lunch break or are playing on the train - but it isn't a title you can really sit down with for a couple hours and play non-stop. Anticipate this when going in. It was designed to be played 15- 30 minutes at a time, over a very long time period. If you power through it in a weekend, you're going to have a very bad time...
Also - all this talk about a multiplayer focus is just not acurate. I've S ranked the entire game alone and it isn't that difficult. Played with others in co-op, and they do make bosses more engaging... but it is just as solid a solo game as it is a co-op game.
I really wanted it to be remade for consoles.
If they can do it with Kingdom Hearts, they can do it here.
