Just finished MGS Ground Zeroes and am WAY confused! [GZ spoilers!]

As a PC gamer, I never played the earlier games so I tried watching a couple of catchup videos but the story just seemed utterly confusing. So I just gave up with that and played GZ. I wasn't 100% sure of what, who or why, but I played the story as intended, rescuing Chico and Paz (and a few others who seemed to remain behind - oh well...) but then the end-sequence happened and just seemed to take a sharp left turn before it reached 'logic'...

So after the Paz in the plane incident there is all this firing and shooting, 'splosions everywhere, and mysterious voices about war and stuffs, and then credits plus a list of historic war-related events (oh, and my "D" grade for a job not especially well done...). But what is all this supposed to be about?! Does it matter if I don't know before I start Phantom Pain? Is anyone willing to sum up in one or two lines what I just did in Ground Zeroes (besides earn a 'D') so that I have at least a vague clue before I start Phantom Pain?

If so, many thanks for your help. If not, I think I should seriously consider Peggle as my next game to play.

In Ground Zeroes you save your former buddies from Peace Walker Game : Paz and Chico. In meantime UN inspection for nuclear weapons of Mother base begins.

At the end of Ground Zeroes, Mother base (Outer Heaven, country of soldiers ruled by soldiers) gets under attack and destroyed. UN inspection was only deception. Paz throws her self from helicopter thinking there is another bomb inside her.The same helicopter in which Big Boss is, gets crashed and Big Boss ends up in hospital where he fells in coma.

You awake after 9 years and that is when Phantom Pain begins.

All you should know in the "Big Boss" events in MGS timeline is:
1. Metal Gear Solid 3 : Snake Eater (set in 1960s when he was younger)
2. Metal Gear Solid : Peace Walker (continuation of MGS 3 story he first met chico and paz here)
3. Metal Gear Solid 5 Ground Zeroes (direct continuation of MGS Peace Walker, and to set up MGS Phantom pain story)

Just watch videos about them and you'll be ''less'' confused :)

Your buddies in the previous games were supposed to be dead, but they weren't. So while you rescued them Skull Face, the ugly dude, uses the UN inspection you were supposed to have as a cover to attack and destroy your base while you're gone rescuing everyone.

Then you get the cutscene, then the phantom pain.

You will get some tapes after completing TPP, they explain a lot of the background story, but it doesn't explain all. I don't think anyone can get a full story across all MG/MGS games, as the quote says "There are no facts, only interpretations".

Seriously its a bit confusing. Plus at this point they expected anyone that bought GZ to know what was going on in the MGS story. I just watched videos :D

Don't worry man. There is no better starting point in the whole series really. Hell, even the very first MGS had several references to the first two MG games. Most people just jumped into this series at some point...mainly the first MGS.

BTW, I have played all of the MGS titles MULTIPLE times and I STILL don't get what the ♥♥♥♥ is going on sometimes. The story is utterly insane.....smile, nod and go with it.

The story don't even matter in TPP. There's barely a story at all. Bad guy blew up your base, discover his evil plan and kick his ass for your revenge. That's literally all there is to it lol.

i mean YES it does get rocketed but you don't know that in GZ man, either way. That ♥♥♥♥♥ be dead. Hitting the ocen like that is like hitting concrete. And then the tempurature on a normal day hypothermia. Then she just have full gut surgery. Then no one is looking for her. At some point you just die. MAybe snake could have survived a fall and not like every limb on impact, like Miller. But helicopter crashes have GREAT survival rates, they decend much slower and safer then other aircrafts.

But just naked into a forzen ocean at night.

It was the crash that really did the dmg. The explosion didn't dismember them.
