The combat is great as is the shooting and they give you tons of guns and gadgets to use to do what you want. I guess it's boring if you only use the same stuff every single time and never try the tons of other things the game gives you. With that I mostly used the same 2-3 weapons the entire game and I still had tons of fun going through it.
You don't ever have to repeat the same things over and over. Only one time in the game is doing side-ops a must and even then they are not all similar. If you get bored of the open world just don't do that anymore and do the main story.
Edit: If you don't care about Metal Gear Solid you will not get much if anything out of the story but the gameplay is solid and well worth it.
The game has an ASTOUNDING amount of options for weapons and tools, and it's pretty sweet to pick up a rifle or a handgun and get a totally different feel from it. However, you can't expect players to change their loadouts all the time.
With that said, I'd say it gets boring as much as you make it boring, the game has a really dynamic gameplay in itself, capturing an outpost will rarely be the same experience.
If you don't wanna be dragged by the amount of content there is, simply stick with the Main Ops, and do Side Ops occasionally to gain resources and the like.
It really comes down to what you see as 'reptitive'. This is an open world sandbox so you'll see some of the same textures thoughout the game and such. Do you consider that reptitive or just how you interact?
Do you consider press "A" for an action is reptitive? or do you consider theme.. Thanks to Refunds, you could limit your experience to <2 hours and just refund it after you decide (and skip the intro as much as you can with MGS)
The story is interesting, but I feel too many people wanted their mind's blown across the room. There are themes and characters that (I at least) are enjoyable. The overall story is a little limited because it takes place as a bridge between to periods in a series. But it is good and it is interesting.
For me, I've finished the game and now only have completion bonuses to go for, But afterwards, I look forward to replaying missions I had fun with (And I had *A LOT* of fun) and even after that, I want to make up my own stories and play them out inside the game.
Plus, If you look at most games with a similar price tag, 60 dollars can warrent only 10-12 hours before it's dropped and never picked up again. I've plent of games like that.. Even at 75, I've put in 100 in a little more than a week. I'm more than happy with it.
You've got a lot of freedom on how to complete your missions, and a dozen of tools at your disposal. I like challenging myself and never being seen as I sneak by and extract people. I just unlocked the Sneaking Suit and the decoy, and it's a lot of fun , also being all "ninja" with the Smoke Grenades is fun too.
1. A lot of people are advancing the idea that the repetitiveness can be mitigated by varying your gameplay style, or what the adherents call "being creative."
2. If you play or try to play full stealth, nonlethal silent takedowns from the beginning with no alerts the game is challenging enough to be addictive (in my opinion) because autosaves are scarce and force perfect playthroughs. If you never tag enemies this challenge is easily doubled. The AI get better, so this becomes harder and even frustrating because of the number of things that can go wrong.
