Custom music shuffle utility

Hi everyone!

I've created a utility that will shuffle your custom music for MGSV and then launch the game through Steam.

You've probably noticed that the game doesn't have a shuffle function, and it really sucks to leave autoplay on if you have a large number of tracks by the same artist. This fixes that by attaching a numeric prefix to every mp3 file in your CustomMusic folder, and then launching the game, giving you a fresh music experience every time.

Please note that MGS V still has a hard limit of 100 custom tracks. Having more than that won't impact the randomness of your music selection. You likely will not play through all 100 tracks in the same sitting, but it is still something to keep in mind.

I've also included the source code. This is in case anyone is interested in how it works (I'm very much an amateur, but this does the job), or would like to reassure themselves that it does exactly what it says.

To install it, simply unzip the program in your CustomMusic directory, and create a shortcut to it, or add it as a game to your Steam client. For best results, please ensure that your music selection doesn't have numbers at the start of the filename.

Can confirm that the prefixing works and resets every time you launch the game. Set up a playlist of a bunch of ambient tracks from MGSV and the older games and it works pretty well. Audio formats besides MP3 don't work atm, but those are easily convertible. Thanks for this.

What formats are you using? It'll be a simple matter to add them to the program - I'm just not sure what other formats the game supports off the top of my head. Thank you for being the first person to actually comment on this! :)

Hello! I'm trying it out now. Seems to work great with .mp3 files. Would it hurt to add all of the basic kinds of audio files? At least the ones that MGSV can run. I don't know what they are, but I do have some songs in .m4a. Converting is an option, but can make things cluttered/reduce audio quality.

Thank you very much for your interest! I've just produced a version which should work with MP3 and M4A files. Please let me know if this has any issues, and if there are any other files that need support.

Hey, Anti, thanks for this! I love this! I came across another music shuffler on nexusmods that seems like it was inspired by yours. The nice thing about theirs is that you can specify certain songs to not be shuffled, such as the song you want to keep as the helicopter song. Is it possible to update this to add that feature? I really like how yours just launches the game after the shuffling, which the other one doesn't. Many thanks for your work on this!

Unfortunately, I just don't have the time to work on this. It would be pretty straightforward to add, and would require making the regex exclude something matching a pattern you want to exclude. If I recall correctly, the source code is in the download for this.

I made this while I was unemployed and a lot younger. Now when I get home, I don't want to think about computers 😇
