In what order should one play the MG games?

Seeing how confusing Kojima's games are, it probably doesn't help even if one were to play them in the order they were published.

I would recommend to play it in any case, portable ops has canonical story links retained from Metal Gear Solid 3 and many characters are in the game: Big Boss, Colonel Campbell, Eva, Gray Fox, Major Zero, Para-Medic, Revolver Ocelot, Sigint, Sokolov, Solid Snake, plus few FOX teams are all present in the game story. They offer more details on the main game console release.

I just hope PC will get a good collection of MGS games. A good collection will sell a lot on PC and on the new consoles.

As a fan of MGS since 1998, I don't care much for the upcoming remake, I prefer a collection.
