But the canon story goes as: MGS3, Peace Walker, Ground Zeroes, Phantom Pain, MGS1, Metal Gear, MGS2 and MGS4.
I don't think Snake's Revenge, Acid, Portable Ops and Rising are canon.
MGS1 should be after Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2. Otherwise correct.
Also don't recommend the OG Metal Gear games. They have not aged well.
What's that ???
Indeed, Portable OPS (like Peace walker) has some story linked to the lore that includes the main characters of the series - so is the Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel a good source for the story.
{1964} Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake-Eater (Big Boss / Naked Snake) >> {1974} Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (Big Boss) >> {1975} Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (Big Boss) >> {1984} Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (Big Boss/V-Snake)
This is the order you should play the games because the main character in V is Big Boss.
And his story is much more interesting than Solid Snake's
who's story starts right after Phantom Pain: That being, Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid 1, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 4. END point.
So just play for Big Boss's story right now, especially since the most legitimate recent version of the game by Kojima has his story.
Thank you.
You posted in the wrong forum then
Chronological order, its MGS3, Peace Walker, Ground Zeroes, Phantom Pain, Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, MGS, MGS2, and MGS4.
With the obvious exceptions of MGSV Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain, all of these games are available as part of Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection for PS3 if you have one handy. It includes a download voucher for MGS1 and VR Missions which may or may not still be good to redeem, but MGS1 is also pretty cheap on the PSN Store and should only cost you a few bucks at the most.
There's also two games that are questionable regarding whether they're canon to the franchise's storyline; Portable Ops for PSP and Metal Gear Rising. Portable Ops takes place between the events of MGS3 and Peace Walker, but has many similarities in plot that results in Peace Walker straight up contradicting Portable Ops. It's also rather archaic compared to Peace Walker in mechanics and such, you can probably pass on that pretty easily without being lost unless you're interested or curious. Rising is a spinoff game that takes place after MGS4 but aside from that its pretty divorced from the story of the previous games and is an action game more akin to Devil May Cry or Bayonetta. I enjoyed it, but its a very different game compared to the other games.
If Kojima launched a certain entry that is set before previously launched entries, its because he absolutely expects you to have played said entries. Like MGS3, for example, its set in 1964, and is chronologically the first title of the franchise, however, it makes several call-backs to events that will happen "in the future" (i.e, MGS1 and 2), and you get to see some known characters during their origin (which just completely loses its impact if you play them chronologically). Release order is as follows:
1. Metal Gear
2. Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
(you can "skip" those two, read until the end for further explanations)
3. Metal Gear Solid
4. Metal Gear Solid 2 - Sons of Liberty
5. Metal Gear Solid 3 - Snake Eater
6. Metal Gear Solid - Portable Ops (skipable, will also elaborate further down)
7. Metal Gear Solid 4 - Guns of the Patriots
8. Metal Gear Solid - Peace Walker
9. Metal Gear Solid 5 - Ground Zeroes (this one is only an hour long, but it serves as the prologue for Phantom Pain, and it also comes bundled with PP's complete edition)
10. Metal Gear Solid 5 - The Phantom Pain
Ok, so, explanations:
> The first two titles are REALLY old, they were released back in the MSX during the 80s (and later got an awful NES port). However, their story is VERY much canonical and important. The reason why you can skip them, is because in the menu of MGS1 there is a summary for both games that pretty much encapsules everything you need to know before starting MGS1. So don't worry, but definetely read those (you can also look up their stories on YouTube if you want)
> MGS Portable Ops is canonical (its even mentioned in Peace Walker), however, this one wasn't written or directed by Kojima himself, and thus, the story is very self-contained and doesn't have any impact on later titles. I sill recommend it just because its a pretty good game, but you can skip it if you want, or just watch the cutscenes online.
> After MGS4 and before MGS5, we got Metal Gear Rising - Revengeance. This one is definetely a spin off (which is apparent from its gameplay - a hack 'n slash - and the fact that it was developed by Platinum Games, the folks who made Bayonetta). Not only that, but its story its pretty wonky and over the top, its really meant to be just a game where you have fun and beat some up robots. Kojima himself said he loves the game, though, and it really is one hell of a good spin off, but in terms of story, its totally skipable.
Also...
Please don't follow this advice. Don't mean to be rude, but like... Don't follow this advice if you really care about the story. Just play them on release order, trust me (I myself played the franchise for the first time a few months ago and I can definetely assure you that release order is 100% the intended way to experience the saga, not to mention that if you play them in chronological order, you would have to go back to much older games after finishing Phantom Pain, and while I still think the first games still hold up pretty well, it might be a little harsh for you to get used to them not having gameplay features that MGSV has).
Enjoy the series! If you need any help or have any questions, feel free to add me and DM me :)
I just hope PC will get a good collection of MGS games. A good collection will sell a lot on PC and on the new consoles.
As a fan of MGS since 1998, I don't care much for the upcoming remake, I prefer a collection.
(also, same, I'd rather get the older titles on pc, they don't even need to remaster them, as long as its a good, stable port)
In what order should you play them?
You have been given countless answers here on the form, some suggesting you play in the order of release.
Some suggesting in order of timeline, including mine, which I suggest.
This is merely how you wanna go about it. Do you want to play Metal Gear Solid first, then Metal Gear Solid 2, and once you get to Metal Gear Solid 3, have a prequel to Big Boss?
but then immediately right after, jump back into MGS4 and then Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker?
Or do you want to go in relation to story? For example, Solid Snake's story is confined to Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2, and finally Metal Gear Solid 4.
Or do you want Big Boss's story?
Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain?
This all depends on if you just play at all and figure out for yourself.
Don't worry about what order the story goes in, or by order of release.
Play it for the sake of the game, and from your experience, make a decision on which game to play next!
4. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
