**!!SPOILERS!!** The Gas Mask boy's actions explained

A lot of you know this, but a lot of you don't. Spoilers start here.

So, if you listened to the tapes, you know the boy is called Tretij Rebenok (I think?) or The Third Boy. I am sure you all know another name for him (SPOILER FOR ALMOST EVERY MGS Psycho Mantis )
Now, a lot of you wonder- what motivates him to do what he does? Sometimes he seems to be helping you, but others he is trying to hurt you.
This is because his actions are determined by how much anger is stored within the people in his area, he choses what he does based on who has the most anger inside them for someone.
A few clues of who he is helping is based on his appearance. This is generally hard to notice. Here is a list of his appearances and what they mean. No pictures though, sorry, to lazy to get them.

1. When he has firing burning from his sleeves, his actions are being influenced by "The Man on Fire" (SPOILER FOR MGS 3 Volgin ) This is really obvious in the very first scene you see The Third Boy in the game, when trying to reach the elevator in the hospital.
2. When a horn is portruding from his head similar to Snake's, this mean's his actions are influenced by Snake. This is scene in the Hospital when The Boy uses his powers to manipulate the helicopter crash into spinning the ruttors and killing the XOF forces.
3. When he has the Childs necklace on in "The Devils House", I believe that The Boy is being influenced by Shabani.
4. I have heard some people say that Mantis can be seen in posession of a mask similar to Skull Face's, to show he was influenced by Skull Face. I haven't been able to see the mask, probably because he alway wore black and the mask is black and I couldn't catch it.
5. When he has the red beret strapped to his should, similar to Eli's, Eli is influencing him. This is seen in the final fight with Sahalanthropus (No need to tell me, I know I butchered the spelling) when The robot attacks everything and The Man on Fire dies.
These are all of the people who influence him in this game. I could tell you more, but that would spoil other games, so I am going to put that in a neat spoiler text for you in case you haven't played them and plan to.

Eli is Liquid Snake from MGS 1. Psycho Mantis is still working with Liquid in that game because he adopted the mind of a cereal killer after delving to deep into the mind of one and adopting his personality while working with the FBI, and quit his job to be a freelance spy. He got hired to work with Liquid as his organization's (Named FOXHOUND) psychic expert. Mantis never really agreed with Liquid on his revolution, but he wanted to kill as many people as possible since he hated people after being in so many of there minds, and this job helped him do that. Before Mantis' death in MGS 1, he opened a secret passage for Snake to use to get to his objective before he died, and he said it was the first time he used his power to helped someone, and that it felt nice to him. This hints that Mantis never had the intentions of helping Volgin, or Shabani, or Snake, or Eli, or Skull Face for any reason other than to help himself.

I hope you found this helpful and informitave, because I didn't, and I hope this sheds some light on The Third Boy, who is one of my favorite characters in the MGS series.

Yeah. I'll have to look into finding the horn and the Mask. I've seen the others though. I would have thought that he would have taken a liken to Miller though lol.

I have listened to the tapes, that's how I know how The Boy is motivated. I am pretty sure that they don't tell you the clues, or times.

Looking back I am surprized he didn't take a liking to Miller at some point. Maybe because The Boy doesn't want to take off a leg to symbolize it.

There is still one question though.
How about when he summoned whale to destroy the helicopter before ocelot come ? I don't think i saw he had those horn.

I didn't find this all out my self, other members of the MGS community have figured some of this out before me.
As for your question, I believe the whale was when The Man on Fire influenced The Third Boy.
Since he was chasing down Snake and Ishmael in the van and the whale came out of the water while he was chasing, this leads me to believe The Boy was influenced by The Man on Fire.
There is also the possibility that the whale influenced The Third Boy, but I doubt it wanted revenge on Snake or the guys in the firetrucks, or the XOF forces.

Oh. I just did some reading. A lot of people think the whale was summoned by Mantis when he was influenced by Snake to take out XOF forces. I would still say The Man on Fire though, since the whale was on fire. A lot of people are also talking about the Moby ♥♥♥♥ (novel) references in the game.

I am pretty sure it was because at the testing facility (Leningrad university) he was in there were 3 other boys. He was the last one to enter the facility, so they called him The Third Boy since they did not know his real name.
Also, I think I have been saying it wrong the whole time, it is actually The Third Child, but for the same reason. People seem to be using different terms in game and on forums as well.
