METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

It is no nation we inhabit but a language.
Make no mistake; Our native tounge is our true fatherland.

Skullface uses this quote from Emil Cioran during the jeep speech.

But Emil Cioran didn't write that until 1987. How is Skullface quoting something that won't be said until 3 years later. Are we taking for granted that the game takes place in 1984 simply because that's what we are being told?

Funny but he says he's quoting a philosopher when he says it. It's even in the trailer on the store page.

The Cure didn't release Friday I'm In Love until 1992.

Just saying.

Skull Face was from Hungary, so maybe he met Emil before he actually published that statment.

He does just say "A Philosopher," implying nobody would be aware of who Emil was or that he made that statement.

Not every song was released in 1984 either. Giant fire whales, electronic cigars and idroids also were nowhere close to existing in 1984. The game takes some liberties.

It's hard to form a concrete timeframe because we don't know if Metal Gear is still following the real world timeline at this point. The Soviet-Afgan war ended in 1989. We already know Big Boss has diassociative amnesia and identity disorder from the Paz scenes, so his conception of time could be warped and that probably explains the strange "jump" in time to the mirror scene at the end of the game.

Interesting thought....but it is more likely that the time skip was a simple 'flash forward' and Paz was just a hallucination brought about by the dome shrapnel.

The time skip could definetly just be that, it doesn't matter much. But I'm positive that nothing said in those Paz scenes were actually about Paz (who's dead) but about BB's underlying problems.

The game does have a quote about no facts, only interpretations.

Obviously theres not going to be everything 100% accurate with actual history when its a fictional story. Still it doesnt have to be, since its technically its own different and unique universe. Doesnt even have to be the same philospher [or the same band to respond to the same issue with music] as in real life~
