What does "the man who sold the world" means?
I understand that Big Boss is this man, but how did he sell the world? Or what did he sell? Trying to get the full picture here. Thanks in advance!

The man who sold his country
The man who betrayed his friend
The man who became a villian
The man who created a phantom

Kojima really likes David Bowie. The company Diamond Dogs is also named after a Bowie song that he wanted to have be the intro track until his team convinced him it was a bit too psychedelic and silly and didn't really fit the tone of waking up from a coma to a bunch of murder. The lyrics of the song suggest an encounter with a doppelgänger, which is appropriate if you've played the "Truth" mission. "Oh no, not me/We never lost control..."

I actually think the cover they used in the game is better for the mood and theme, but the original track is great too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSH--SJKVQQ

We passed upon the stairs
Spoken was and when
Although I wasn't there
He said I was his friend
Which came as a surprise
I spoke into his eyes
I thought you died alone
A long long time ago

Oh no, not me
We never lost control
You're face to face
With the man who sold the world

I laughed and shook his hand
And made my way back home
I searched for farming land
Years and years I roamed
I gazed a gazer stare
We marked a million hills
I must have died alone
A long long time ago

Who knows?
Not me
I never lost control
You're face, to face
With the man who sold the world

Who knows?
Not me
We never lost control
You're face, to face
With the man who sold the world

Eh... i think some of those may the wrong lyrics these are right

We passed upon the stair, we spoke of was and when
Although I wasn't there, he said I was his friend
Which came as some surprise I spoke into his eyes
I thought you died alone, a long long time ago

Oh no, not me
I never lost control
You're face to face
With The Man Who Sold The World

I laughed and shook his hand, and made my way back home
I searched for form and land, for years and years I roamed

I gazed a gazely stare at all the millions here
We must have died alone, a long long time ago

Who knows? not me
We never lost control
You're face to face
With the Man who Sold the World

Woah the original poem the song is based on is super creepy:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antigonish_(poem)

Antigonish (poem)

"Antigonish" is an 1899 poem by American educator and poet Hughes Mearns. It is also known as "The Little Man Who Wasn't There", and was a hit song under that title.

Yesterday, upon the stair,
I met a man who wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today,
I wish, I wish he'd go away...

When I came home last night at three,
The man was waiting there for me
But when I looked around the hall,
I couldn't see him there at all!
Go away, go away, don't you come back any more!
Go away, go away, and please don't slam the door...

Last night I saw upon the stair,
A little man who wasn't there,
He wasn't there again today
Oh, how I wish he'd go away...

It's basically about having an identity crises, maybe schizophrenia and hallucinations, seeing ghosts, etc. All stuff you do in the game!
