METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN

Quiet, please, stop helping me.
So, how often has this happened to you:

You're infiltrationing an outpost, no big deal, right, you've had Quiet scout the place, and she's standing on-guard.

You're sneaking up to a guy to grab him and choke some secrets out of him, maybe show him your Wildlife Wrestling Federation moves, and he randomly turns you, then proceeds to drop a deuce in his drawers because he sees either an Afghan woman or a dude with horns growing out of his head and a cyberarm creeping up to him.

A big ! appears over his head. Bullet time begins.
No big deal, right? You have a tranq gun in your hands for JUST this reason. Hell, maybe you're close enough to sprint the remaining three steps and restrain him before he can fire.

And them POW! A decidedly NON-silent sniper rifle shot fires. It takes an agonizingly long several seconds for the shot to hit, during which you know that your goose is cooked. EVERYONE heard that.

Thanks, Quiet. I know you love me, that's why you're covering me. Could you like, NOT cover me unless I specifically tell you to cover me? I love you too, Quiet, but please, for the love of god, hold fire unless I give the order, okay?

Or, and this is a RADICAL thought, let me put a silencer on your rifle. I've got one on mine! It works!

She has a special sniper that requires a special silencer (yes, it's dumb).

And I don't mean to be mean, but this could be easily resolved by just not getting spotted. I've never had anyone "Randomly" turn around. They generally follow set paths if you watch them enough. Don't make any noise and they will not turn "randomly". Quiet's entire purpose is to save your *** when you mess up. And you're messing up.

Send her off to scout another base

There are ways to avoid this. I actually didn't really have a problem with this, I don't know if that is because I responded quickly to getting spotted or what. I felt like Quiet didn't fire until I gave the order no matter what.
People have issues with quiet because they do not understand how rules of engagement work. Few games incorporate this in team combat these days and the last one i can remember that did it well was the now OLD AS HELL Socom games for the playstation. With the exception of when you are discovered and all hell is about to break loose, quiet won't fire a shot unless ordered.. and if ordered. she will continue to shoot people in the face until she is told to stop. People tend to get disappointed when she shoots as soon as you are discovered but your stealth is blown at that point and she isn't going to just let you get shot at while she has a great view of the people shooting at you.

Also a few people have complained that she even shoots people being held already at gunpoint. These people are now harmless, pose no threat and should not be a target right? well not to quiet. As long as you have her covering you she will pop a bullet/tranq into anyone who knows of your presence, holding a gun or not. So if you wish to interrogate/torture your captive. Have quiet cease cover.

Also, after quiet has started shooting up the place once you are discovered, find a place to hide and tell her to cease cover. She will stop shooting and eventually the guards will lose both of you.

Above all remember you have more control over quiet than you think.

What bugs me is when I move to a new area and forget to tell her to Cease Cover. Then I sneak up to a guy and start interrogating him, and before I can get the question out, she puts one in his dome. But that one's my fault for leaving her on cover mode.

Yes, blame the buddy for your own bad play.

I've noticed that alarms raised by Quiet do not affect the alert status of the outpost towards Snake. As long as you don't hear the alert sound, you should still be undetected. I use this to my advantage, as a distraction. While everyone is busy going after Quiet I can sneak through the outpost and complete the mission.

Yes, and you know what could just as easily resolve all conflict? If all soldiers put down their arms and refused to fight.

I did not mess up. I was going for the guy and he turned to look at me. Don't even say he heard me, because sneaking suit and crouching.

It was no big deal. I had the guy dead to rights; one or two more meters closer, and he would've been held up. I would have had the guy down before he could have raised the alert.

QUIET raised the Alert, by taking a FREAKING SHOT with a FREAKING UNSILENCED RIFLE. She saw that he had seen me, and rather than wait for, say, me to just drop his ass with my tranq pistol - which was out and in my hand - she fires, putting the entire base on alert and making everyone start looking for me.

I double-checked the conversation menu; the option was cover, not CEASE cover.
I never gave the order to fire, she just fired on her own.

Then send her to another base or avoid getting caught. She is going to defend you if you get cuaght. I still never found this to be a problem.

My stealth is not blown until everybody is shooting and running and screaming and looking for infiltrators. UNTIL THEN, my stealth is not blown. If one guy has seen me, it's not a big deal unless he's like, far outside of my tranq range. I can still whip up my pistol and drop him down. Hell, if he's close enough, I can restrain him.

Quiet blew my stealth by sending the entire base into a tizzy. All she had to do was wait like, two seconds to see if this guy went down or not. But no, she fires the VERY INSTANT someone spots me, whether or not I've told her to do so.

Yeah, but they're still running around for the rest of the night instead of sticking to nice, quiet patrol patterns and chatting with each other and sometimes sleeping and such, and so are the next two up the road. She blew it, not me. I could easily have recovered, but Quiet went loud without orders, and that bugs me.

Above all remember you have more control over quiet than you think.

Really? So I can tell her to NOT FIRE NO MATTER WHAT EVEN IF I'M BEING SHOT UP UNLESS I TELL HER TO FIRE?

Because I can't seem to do that.

Allow me to illustrate three scenarios for you.

Snake, or Snake's representative (Roaring Dhole in my case,) is infiltrating an outpost. Quiet has scouted the place and marked up many of the targets, and is now standing ready to provide sniper fire.

Roaring Dhole is sneaking up behind a guy, and is about 5m away from him, when the guy turns suddenly, unexpectedly. He sees Dhole, and Quiet sees that he has seen Dhole.

In the first scenario, Quiet opens fire the nanosecond he has seen Dhole, setting off the whole base. The immediate problem has been dealt with, but now there's a much bigger problem, what with the running, and the screaming, and the guards looking for infilrators and snipers, and them radioing the contact to CP (what the hell is CP, anyway?) and putting the next two bases up and down the road on alert.

In the second scenario, Quiet holds her fire for a few moments, waiting until she's absolutely certain this guy is going to get a shot off. HE doesn't, because Dhole is faster, snapping her pistol up and tranqing him. The immediate problem is dealt with, and Quiet can continue humming.

In the third scenario, Dhole sent Quiet away because she knew Quiet was an unstable loose cannon who couldn't wait for anything. Dhole neutralizes the third guy, but this time while she's interrogating him, another guard comes around the corner, sees her. Worse, she fumbles her reflexive tranq shot at him. It is at this point that cover-fire from a sniper would be nice, but Quiet's gone because she can't wait. So now this guy gets his shotgun up and shoots Dhole.

I think you can see which scenario I would prefer, yes?

Yup, I don't know how many A+ I've gotten in a choke hold only to have Quiet blow their brains out shooting between my arms.

If you don't want Quiet to do what she is there to do. Then don't bring her along instead of bringing her along and getting mad when she does her job. CP means Command Post.
Antitype Oct 1, 2015 @ 2:59pm
Quiet -> Cease cover. There problem solved. She won't intervene even if you agro the whole base.

What I want her to do is to NOT make the situation worse.

Her firing means we Go Loud. The whole point of what I'm doing is to avoid Going Loud.

If I wanted to just Go Loud from the word 'go', I'd be sniping with her. Or calling in artillery strikes. Or I'd drop in with a freaking tank.
