My guess is that BB told Venom to surrender and die. (like they did with The Boss)
Venom refused, but Solid bested him. (That's why mid mission BB starts telling Solid wrong information, because it wasn't BB, it was Venom)
Big Boss is weak to rockets to the face.
Solid was just meant to be somehting to stall Nato from being able to Bomb Outer Heaven so Metal Gear could be finished but when Solid kept being amazing BB got panic & started telling him to take Trap filled routes.
Solid was in Foxhound don't forget they're the most legendary unit along side others like Fox & Cobra, so it's not like he was a nobody & he was trained by Miller.. who hated both Boss's.
Miller hated Jack for abandoning him & Venom for not listening to him, example of that is Venom takes Ocelot's side over Miller all time in this game.
